I am a retired High School teacher and bored to death staying home. Always wanted to drive a big rig. Is this something to pursue or is it out of reach?

Go for it. It's a great career and also a great second career. Which state do you live in?

The best way is to attend a 160 hr. CDL school.
While there, acquire all the endorsements; tanker/hazmat/doubles/triples.
Get a TWIC ID Card; Google for nearest TWIC office. TWIC is used for entry to sea ports, military bases, chemical plants.
You will need original social security card and original birth certificate.

If you want an easier way, attend a trucking company CDL school and the best one right now is Earl Henderson Trucking.

If Con-way Truckload hires in your area, they have a pretty good program and pay for CDL school.

During my time OTR, I had met drivers who were former:
    Teachers
Doctors ( foot doctor & a thoracic surgeon)
    Police
    Artists
    Secretaries
    Architect
    Cooks
A 63 year old widowed homemaker, who decided she wanted to drive a truck for a few years. (JB Hunt)

    I think you'll do ok.

That first year pay is horrid and hasn't been raised in years.

    "Get your year in" elsewhere.

But you will definitely go anywhere and everywhere. Especially Texas.

None of that pud job been there before....what's the fun in that?

    Chinatown Thanks this.
