    Yeah Brother, We're still here.

As a newbie to this site and the trucking industry (I'm in the very beginning stages of obtaining a CDL-A--studying for permit test in Tennessee), your commonsense and candor doesn't go unnoticed. I'll be the first to second that notion!

I'm gonna' keep an eye on this thread. I'm sure there's more learnin' to come.

    Thanks for your insight.

Couldnt be more right! I can honestly say that I have learned more here than in school! Not saying school wasnt good, but here you will REALLY learn about the trucking business, not just the how to drive basics!

    AS,

Glad you posted that - It gave me something to read this past week while I was out. Let me save my 6 books for the next run!

And - strange as it may seem - I already had a chance to start in the direction you took. First week or so out, a driver saw me park the truck - it wasn't an awkward park, nor particularly difficult if you set up for it right (but that's almost always the case, anyway).

Anyway, he saw me doing laundry a bit later and - without knowing jack about me, other than I successfully parked a big rig one time - offered me a job with one of those stage transportation companies.

I may regret it later in life (they were hauling for Bon Jovi, I think).. but anybody who offers me a job based on so little information is either frantic with desperation, or there's something I'm missing that could well bite me in the sitdownupon. I politely declined the offer.

Still, it would be interesting, I think.. for a while.

Gigs like that can be sweet.
The drawback is that, with the touring companies, once a tour begins, you're on it 'till the end. Could be four months all across the country and back again.

Many drivers do it for the sake of doing it, and to be able to say they did --- but they don't always last too long. Three or four tours and they're on to other thangs.

I hear Reba's touring company, StarStruck, treats their drivers VERY well, and won't even consider booking venues that don't provide proper facilities for Big trucks.

You'd be AMAZED at how many convention centers squeeze their docks into tiny areas, and sometimes you have to drive right out on the floor to load/unload.
And y'all better NOT hit ANYthing!
Some of the tightest backing situations were at convention centers, and they can be VERY confusing, especially when the marshaling yard is blocks or miles away.

Near me here in town, there's a company that erects those huge TV type screens for sporting events and concerts. That type of company probably has a better home plan, but I haven't checked them out, ...... yet.

I think your appearance and general demeanor is probably what caught his eye.
And, you have to admit --- he was/is correct in his impression of you.

Or, were you wearin' your Hawaiian shirt and shorts with sandals, ..................... again? :biggrin_25523:

I was at a truck stop last night, i picked up an application to maybe get some temp work at the fuel house out back for the truckers (maybe shoot questions at them when they come in and have time to kill), but the one guy at the accessories desk for truckers, i asked him about being one. He was retired, and he said this one time, he was in New York, in one of these buroughs, and the dock was slightly down this alley, but the only way to get to it, was to drive past the alley, and back up. He said this big african american guy would come out, and tell you, "you watch me. I will tell you where to go safely. If i catch you looking in your mirrors, you can do this by yourself."

He told me this one driver the big guy was helping looked in his mirrors, and when he looked back to the nose of his truck, he was gone. LOL
Kinda gotta appreciate any help you get when you get it. I have a rule, never turn down a steak dinner and never turn down a trip to the bathroom. Might add one, and never turn down a helping hand.

I will be the first to help someone if I have the time. Because if it were me in that position, i wouldnt want to be someones free entertainment. How great the feeling is, for both of you, to see someone struggling with something, then have someone else come out of the blue, and offer that helping hand.
