For about 10k more you can get an 18-speed 389 mid-roof...

Maybe if I hit the lottery. I have about 75k in the bank after the last 2-3 years of driving company and living on the relative cheap while still trying to enjoy my younger years. Maybe in another 2-3 years I'll make the jump.

 

I wouldn't want all that multiplex electronic mess. Probably impossible to work on it if you haven't got the software.

 

That would likely be the KW900L ICON Edition. Last time PACCAR put out a special edition it was the 2007 Pete 379 Legacy. Turned out to be the last of the model. Considering the 900 has been in production (with updates, obviously) since 1961, maybe PACCAR is putting it out to pasture...?

Oh, and if you think $175K is bad, try pricing it in Canada. A dealer about an hour from me is taking orders starting at $230K.

 

Remember reading something about future EPA production fleet fuel average. I don't think KW said they were going to do away with W9's, but the title & article were trying to speculate it that way.

 

They would announce it a long time in advance if they intended to stop producing W900's. Pete didn't just make a final run of 1,500 Legacy 379's at the last minute keeping it a secret until they rolled off the line. They had press releases about the end of the 379 a year or more in advance. I remember it. I also remember hauling a lot of freight into the Denton and Madison plants back then. Talk about eye candy. My favorite all time were the 379X those were some beautiful trucks rolling off the line. W900 is still a good platform for the future. Maybe not for typical box or reefer freight but it will always be suitable for open deck, heavy haul, and off road trucking where aerodynamics aren't such a big deal.

 

Although I agree about the time line, I do find it a bit odd that Petercar and KW would both have special editions of their top of the line offerings at the same time, that 75th Pete was announced last Nov.
I also have to question the logic behind Paccar having three totally different cab widths in production at the same time, 6 different cabs at the same time.

The traditional narrow cab 1.9 meters, the new 2.1 width cabs of the 680 and the 587, and of course the 2.3 meter 579/T700 cabs, just seems excessive, I would have thought that the 2.3 would be a goner, but maybe it is the swan song for the 1.9?
