Greetings, I am enrolled in a private CDL school that is about 150 miles from home and requires me to spend nights away from home. I am not on anybody's payroll and incurring expenses in order to attend the training. Am I allowed to take the standard $59.00 per day deduction for expenses?

    I appreciate your responses.

Regardless of per diem or not, it certainly would be deductible as an education expense.

save all receipts for everything you buy in the course of your traveling and lodging and foods, and clothing. let your accountant handle the details. keep it all nice and neat.

It may be deductible as an education expense (or not, don't know), however, you are NOT subject to the hours of service regulations, so the standard TRANSPORTATION workers per diem of $59 per day does not apply.
