I don't go to Montreal or Mexico, so speaking their language isn't a problem.

 

I think they should speak the language, and for our own saftey...be able to read it.

I don't cross into Mexico because I don't speak the lingo. Nor do I go where they speak french....
IF I can't speak or read the local lingo I don't go there....one exception Miami

 

Yes. No one should be driving on the roads in any country without being able to understand the road signs and communicate with law enforcement. I'm not asking for complete fluency, but basic understanding. I would never dream of going to Germany and driving on the roads, I don't read or speak any German.

 

Isn't one of the basic requirements for a CDL supposed to be that you have the ability to read and speak English enough to communicate and understand directions/instructions?

 

Sure, but that is open to interpretation. And the tests are given in multiple languages. Heaven forbid we discriminate against someone who doesn't speak English.

What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? Trilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages? Bilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks 1 language? An American.

It's probably not the fault of American citizens that most only know English. The educational system was set up that way to keep Americans at a disadvantage. (Did you know there was once almost a requirement that laws in the USA be printed in German?

But things are changing. My cousin's 7 year old boy in the public schools in Georgia has a school day that includes German language instruction. Most other countries offer some foreign language instruction in elementary schools.

But, yes, I can see it'd be nice if drivers in the USA spoke English.
