It's seems a lot of companies are going with automatics these days and they're not doing new drivers any favors. U.S. Xpress recruiter told me the trucks were about 50/50, and I road tested in an 8 speed Pete. Then when I got in my trainers truck boom no stick. Surprise surprise the truck was a piece of garbage. Trying to control your speed while backing an automatic truck is a nightmare. I was really excited about Maverick's reefer division and I just found out they're automatics, too. When I first talked to Schneider the first question they stressed was "your school taught you on a 10 speed, right?" That question is no longer on the ads on their job boards. Hell I'm not even a convicted felon and I'll consider going to Western Express if they train me with a real truck.
Also chronic back pain means TMC is probably out of the question.
Starter companies with manual transmission?

Hats off to you for wanting to learn a manual first instead of the other way around, driver.
TruckDuo Thanks this. -
Usually companies offer both..Celadon offers 10,13, and autos. You cannot train in an auto..its only an option, once you chose your truck or division.
TruckDuo and AlexFromMD Thank this. -
Not sure what your problem is with autoshifts, I always thought thy were pretty neat. Not sure what it has to do with getting properly trained. You can learn to shift anytime, it's not that hard, I could probably teach a semi smart monkey how to do it in a day or two. Maybe want rethink your priorities on this and not all autos are created equal. So give them a chance especially if it means getting a good carrier or a bad one. Good Luck
TruckDuo Thanks this. -
a monkey can be trained to sit behind the wheel, smile and drive off a cliff.
leave the guy alone, he's making a clear choice to continue learning a stick. -
I seriously want to train a monkey to drive, like you don't even know. Come up on my 10 and say " hey George, you're up, here's your banana, we gotta clear Texas by morning so don't stop at the scales"

I just finished 100% of my training with Swift and haven't touched an automatic. To my knowledge you can request a mentor/trainer with a manual if you're are concerned.
I was in the same boat as you. I wanted to learn a manual so that way the day I am ready to leave Swift I'll have the experience with a manual.
I trained on 8 speeds in school. Both mentors I had both drove 13 speeds and the truck I have now is a 10 speed 2013 old worn Volvo. I'm not even done with six months of driving and have driven three different manual trannys. I'm pleased and gaining my confidance with my manual transmission experience thus far.
There are still way more manuals out there than autos. I don't see anything wrong with autos at all, but not all companies can afford brand spanking new fleets with autos. Epecilly local mom and pop companies that I want to work for after I'm done with OTR.
Hopefully this is helpful and I'm not talking just to talk because I crave human interaction.Dave Schneider, TruckDuo, G.Anthony and 1 other person Thank this. -

Leave him alone G. Who gave you the big stick, I made a simple comment and suggestion, wasn't picking on anybody. And if the OP has a problem with me i;m sure he is man enough to take me on. So have a nice day G and I hope you retire sooner than later too.
Canned Spam and TruckDuo Thank this.
