I have a question on refresher training. I have been driving about a year and a half now. I live in the coastal N.C. area. There is potential for a non driving job coming up in the near future. If I leave driving how does a person get refresher training and how quickly do I become "stale" in an employers eyes? Thank you for any responses.

Been off the road for 12 years and still get calls asking if I would consider refresher training to drive for some umpty squat company. I am driving now....but not semi's. There are a few that would not require a trainer after doing the refresher.
-
Depends on the company. Most "word" their requirements as such: "Must have 1 year recent experience in the past 3 years" or "Must have 3 months experience in the past 1 year" etc...
So it depends on how their personal requirements are worded. -

I met a guy doing a week of refresher similar to your case in Indianapolis at C-1 truck driving school on Raymond Ave.
If you pay in advance might be a few hundred bucks. -
Refresher course, HA, so I can have time with a trainer that has less miles than my rider tractor mower? Not gonna happen. I would get fired before hired because of my mouth would get me in trouble.

Western express does refresher..went through it last year..wasn't but one day and then with a trainer. But sum refreshers were teamed up and had to do 10,000 miles as a team and then solo. PTL Inc offers refresher course. And Celadon does refresher if have less than 6 months of experience through there school called Quality Drivers and then after the course of nothin but driving and backing course, take Celadon backing and driving test, if pass, go to orientation, After pass orientation u go out with a trainer for 10,000 miles then come back and do a test out to go solo.

Some head hunter from Paschall called me last week....I told him how long I was off the road. He said I was eligible.
Wargames Thanks this. -
Western express of not been payin the minimal hourly wage on the on duty non driving hours so they been sued. I got a letter on it. Since got it, they been trying get me come back to them. PTL Inc been wanting me. Back at end of May 2014 for 2 weeks I got dragged by Celadon on things and half way through orientation I got told I was disqualified for my psp(csa) but mine was clean and everyone wants me. I have been out for a year and almost 2 months. I haven't made up my mind yet. One thing I do like about PTL is that they do have apu, power inverter and fridge in their trucks just like Celadon has. Western Express doesn't and they get on u if idle pass a certain percentage and of with them if want a power inverter it has to be no bigger than 400 watt 12v plug in unit. They do have sum drivers got them put in themselves and microwaves. When come time for maintenance they undo and takeout to hide so don't get caught. If do the lease to own with no buyout deal Western express has, u can do what u want to do.

I had a couple guys in my Truck Driving Institute Course for 3 weeks, expensive but if you want back in price shouldn't be an issue. It beats the longer courses also.
