300 watt cigarette plug inverters???

    Okay, I'm switching companies soon, and where I'm going they don't allow inverters excepting those that plug into a cigarette lighter.

    I've seen some at truckstops that are up to 300watt/500watt peak. watts/volts=amps...300/12=25amps

    Every cigarette plug in a truck I've seen is only rated at 10amps. volts*amps=watts....12*10=120watts for a cigarette lighter circuit

    My big, nasty gaming laptop (Alienware M7900) draws 2.5 amps at 110 volts...in the 250-275 watt range.

    It seems to me that no cigarette inverter is gonna be able to power my laptop without blowing fuses.:biggrin_2553:

    1. Am I correct?

    2. why do they manufacture 300watt inverters if drawing 25 amps will blow the fuse every time?

    Well, I have used many different inverters (Deco Remy being my fav).. the 300 Watt inverters I must say Cobra makes a decent one in this market and stay away from the weak Black and Decker model..

    Will it power your laptop? perhaps if you have the truck running and the idle up a little to give the inverter a stable high power source.. I had a wide screen TV that a Cobra 300 watt would power (no way would the B&D work) The TV power consumption over matched the 300 watt inverter but it still worked..

    I know somebody who works for Crete and their solution to this was a 1000 watt inverter that he hooked jumper cables to.. When he was parked he would pop the hood on his frightliner and connect it to the jumper terminals on the firewall of the truck, then close the hood lol.. When he was finished simply take a minute to unhook and put back into the side box...
