Yes , as long as you don't hang your tongue out so its slapping against your ear .
Actually , if you're referring to backing you should use mirrors and whatever else you need to see where you're going including sticking your head out the window . I don't recommend opening the door and standing on the top step to see better . Its one of those things that make exexaminers pucker up and squirt which is a bad thing .Dog_thetrucker Thanks this. -
Good question,we were told to use mirrors only,no floating gears,no hard takeoffs, hard braking,no skipping gears.Basically drive like on the safety videos. Plus.. you want to pass, you have highway patrol sitting next to you.Dog_thetrucker Thanks this.

In Wisconsin we could look out the window for the 90 degree alley dock. For the straight line and offset we used mirrors only. Make sure you look in right side mirror at least three times on each of the exercises.

I recall once reading that myself, but I've never heard too much about it beyond that.
I'd say if you need to do it, go ahead, as long as it doesn't involve opening the door.

You mean there's something wrong with opening the door and standing on the step???77smartin Thanks this.

Here you only can only use your mirrors to back up otherwise you'll get deducted points. The DMV wants to make sure you know how to use your mirrors when you get out in the real world and have to back up.

Use your mirrors, that is what the examiner wants to see and, why they are there. Looking backwards out the window may be considered a "bad habit". In every driving and manuveuring situation the instructors at the school I attended(who are also state certified examiners) stressed using mirrors. Mirrors are your friends, especially those smaller round convex mirrors, they are your best friends, get to love them, look at your mirrors about every 6 seconds when on the road.

Check your mirrors!
Man, we heard that over and over again whether we were using them correctly, or not.

Yes, I believe there is a chance that may be slightly frowned upon.

I drive a day cab, so I look out the back window, primarily when blind side backing. I see that as simply a tool that's available when I need it.
But that isn't what the OP is really referring to with his question. He's asking if you can look out the driver's side window when backing toward the sight side. I would have to say that's perfectly ok, and therefore is the reason that backing toward the drivers' side is to always be considered preferable, so you can do that very thing.Dog_thetrucker Thanks this.
