@KimberlyinCalifornia - does your husband leave his truck at the terminal? Im in michigan, so they probably do things different, but he never leaves the house before he has a load, with the exception of when his truck broke down and they wanted him to come down with it. And even then he told them he would wait till the next day and they still paid him on the 180 miles they towed the truck down to detroit.

It sounds like your husbands dm might be part of the problem. Have him talk to other guys in the area and find out if the treatment is pretty standard.

I'm definitely not saying Swift is great, but sometimes 1 person can make the difference and if his dm is not taking care of him, that might be part of the problem.

Your husband will get $50 per day layover. However, he MUST contact his Driver Development Manager to request/remind them he gets that pay. While I was with Swift as a trainer I made sure that any time there was a layover they called their DDM to get the $50 per day. This can be in case of a breakdown, if the mentor/trainer is taking home time, etc.

I'm assuming he also has his hotel room paid for by the company.

"Violations" with Swift can come in many forms, and it may be likely that his mentor had overspeed, hard braking events, or hard turning events recorded on the truck "black box". Those are automatically reported to Safety and count against you in an internal Risk Analysis Rating. If your RAR gets too high, then you aren't qualified to be a mentor.

Remember, any time you have another job that has to be logged as On Duty time. I always logged my time playing poker professionally as On Duty.... ;) :D :D :D

He doesn't have to wait a year, he can leave right now. Several companies will hire him. Sure, Swift may send him a bill for CDL school, but your husband can put that on the back burner for now and deal with it when he can.

He doesn't need yo wait a year, he will get a bill for the training but if you educate yourself and find the right company he can make a lot more money and that will pay off the lone in no time. Start looking at ltl carriers many of them are desperate right now, at least on the west coast they are.

I honestly don't know, but all the ltl outfits are realy busy, I think they advertise that they are looking for 5 years experience doubles triples trained and local experience, when realy they need a good driving record and a good brain. My thought is that they ate scaring good drivers from even putting in an application.

Reddaway hires new CDL grads at certain terminals. The website says "one year experience", but as with many companies these days, they bend their own hiring rules.
Con-way LTL has their own CDL training program.

You know, what bothers me the most with this industry today is how they "lable" things to make them sound more professional......."mentor"....my big ole white irish arse!!!!!! A mentor is someone that has decades of experience in a given field....and who's word and opinions are valuid and taken seriously.........not some schmuck that has more than one year driving experience.....and has managed to stay with one of theses Mega's for just longer than that!
    Mentors.......my big ole butt!!!!
