I have an answer to that.
Most companys average about 2,000 in cost when they hire a new driver. From all the background checks orentation, ect.
When they take a driver from an outside school they have all these costs, also paying the trainee when they are with a trainer. Yes the trainee will be driving some miles but they cannot really treat that truck as a full team for the first few weeks in most cases.
At least 50% of new drivers decide within 4-6 months that they cannot hack it on the road and quit. They will eather drive local, or never drive again. If these drivers are from an outside school, Central (or any training company), has not had the chance to really make up for there investment yet.
If these student/ drivers are from a Central school though it is different. Central will be paying back part of the cost of the school while the person is driving. If that person leaves Central before the year is up, they are responcible for the full cost of the school. Which is like 4,500 or so. I cannot remember exactly. In this way Central will get the money back that they invested in hiring the student. And maybe even make a few bucks on the deal.
As soon as they student gains there CDL in that school, they are responcible for paying the money. You will see students in Orentation still getting booted because some info on the background check takes more than the two weeks. Since these students already got there licence, they are responcible for the full cost of the school.
Central knows there numbers. I would hazard a guess that not more than 1 in 8 students that finish there school and upgrade to there own trucks last out there first year. That is allot of people when they probibly average 4 a week, year round, at 4 schools. 12x4=48 ....48x 12 months=576
576 upgraded students x 3000 each= 1,728,000
And my numbers are low. Most weeks there are more than that. It gives you an idea about turnover though. We only have about 2,000 trucks in the fleet.
Also, the students that dont finish the year pay allot more than 3,000.
I would be willing to bet they have at least 800 students finish there schools each year. The income from that would be 3,000,000 a year. If the students finish there year.
Turnover in Central, as with most med and large carriers is over 100%. Some of the carriers like it this way. They want the cheapest drivers in the seats they can get and have the insurance to cover the losses if they get in accidents.
Heck, swift, USA and some other carriers start drivers out at like 24 cents a mile. At least Central starts them at 29 cents. Still way to low for the work we do, but better than most training companys.
Anyway, sorry for such a long rant.

Chrome, that is a very insightful post. You summed it up very well.
Chompi, this forum has a lot of good folks who are very happy to hear the voice of experience. I hope you will drop by and offer your advice from time to time.
Sixpack, only a few days now!! You will be on the road. If you keep your good attitude then you will do very well.
Hang in there, my friends. Keep us informed on how you are doing. -
Well I guess JJ had better get with Central and Find out if I can go to a private School! I really don't want to go through the Central School.
We are on our way to MD right now with a Kraft load a big 334 miles and then we have a good pre-set Joppa MD to Reno Nevada some good miles there 2500 I think. You see JJ's new co-pilot in the drivers seat Lol.

I have made that run JJ.
Last time I did it I stopped at the petro in sparks. Put 40 in the wheel of fortune slot(one farthest to the right) lost the first 20, but won 360 on the second.
It is a good light P&G load. Just make sure your trailer is really clean, they check. -
Hey doing good here in SLC !! Kinda hot. Just doing the school thing, permit testing in the A.M. Pretty easy. Anyway cant wait to move out of the driver rooms to the hotel on Sunday... Anyway will keep updating.... -
jess-juju, Have you considered going to Central's school and having JJ assigned as your trainer? By the way, I like your new avatar!
Dragonmatrix, I will never understand how Simon built such a wonderful facitility and yet made the driver's rooms seem like a prison dorm. I just don't get it.
Sixpack, As you know, Steamboat Springs is such a wonderful place that whenever you visit you really want to move there. Good luck with your decision. -

I will be in Conley tomarrow night, flying out Saturday for the beach.
I may get a hotel room tomarrow night, if I can find one with a shuttle to the airport.
I got irritated when I found out I was going to be there friday, since I had only requested 5 days off so I would not have to unseat truck. It sounded like they wanted me to anyway, so I got my ticked changed to Sat, and will take a full week.
Not sure yet if I have to unseat, I have been waiting 2 days to find out. I just hope they can find a secure location to put all this stuff. you get allot of stuff in a truck over a years time. -
but I'll get tru it. Will drop ya a line later.
