I was wondering if any California residents (recent truck driving school grad, past month) has or is experiencing any issues when turning in your permit to obtain your actual CLASS A license. Here is the issue that has been brought to my attention, that I or my school was unaware of. What I am being told is that once I graduate from school, and go down to the CA DMV, they will take my hard copy of my current CA CLASS C license, and only provide me with a paper/temp copy of my CLASS A until my hardcopy arrives in the mail 14 - 60 days later.
So now that I only have a paper/temp copy of my class A license, I am being told I will not be able to take a drug test for any trucking companies because the paper/temp copy of my class A is not an "official" ID card.
So I was just wondering if there are any recent CA graduates out there who recently went thru the process of obtaining your CLASS A license can shed some light on this issue. I was told that CA DMV just implemented this within the past month or so. Any info would be greatly appreciated as I am within about 1.5 weeks of graduating.

The dmv will punch a small hole in you're license and give it back to you along with a temporary paper license with a seal on it. The cali dmv has been doing this for as long as I can remember. I don't see how this could be an issue with a drug test.

@ rachi - I understand what your saying but from what I'm hearing now is that is no longer the procedure, and from what I'm being told is the DMV physically takes your current hardcopy DL, and does not give it back, so you leave the DMV with only a paper/temp class A license. Supposedly this new rule just took effect within the past month or so. I assuming you already have your class A, that's why I was asking if any recent grad had gone in recently. As for the drug test, no official type of ID, means you cant take a drug test from what I'm being told. Paper/temp DL are not considered official.

Maybe its for new cdl applicants. I just renewed my cdl a month ago and it was business as usual where they punched a hole in my license and then gave it back to me with the new paperwork.

@ChuckBoy...yes, they will now take your Class "C" license away. They just started doing this. You will have to wait for your hard copy which should come soon.

If you have some other acceptable form of ID for the DMV to process your CDL, loose your wallet with the Class C and promise to turn it in when you find it. Or order a duplicate liscence now.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, now I know what I'm working with. Will look at the state ID card but I think the time frame to receive one will take just as long to get the hardcopy class A license. Best bet for now maybe to get an "expedited" passport, which you can get in about a week but it cost some extra money to do that.

In not sure where this info comes from but it's not true. I got my Class A in June they punched a hole in my class B they did the same when I got my class B. My buddy just got his Class A last month and they just punched a hole in his class C and gave it back.

Your also looking at for sure 2 month wait on your CDL from what he told me. I know it took the DMV 4 weeks to process my CDL and that's only because I called SAC and asked about it two days later it was at home while I was on my trainers truck.
