Hi, I have a 98 pete with a 3406e cat. It is smoking and I found oil in the coolant. Would this be the oil cooler? Or something else. Thanks

Hi Cindy, I'm not sure the oil cooler would cause smoking. Sounds like a head gasket, cracked liner or , heaven forbid, a cracked head.

I believe it would. I'm not a Cat person, but it's the excess smoking that leads me to believe, it's not the oil cooler. Is there coolant in the oil? It would be that whiteish glop on the dipstick, or oil cap. That could be a cracked block. I know, not the best news. Probably a head gasket. Did it overheat ever? Lots of help here, good luck.

If your getting coolant in the oil it will steam out the blowby tube. So yes it could be the oil cooler .
Could also be a liner leaking coolant from lower O-rings.

How many miles on engine? Has it ever been rebuilt??

Just to clarify, when you say smoking , out the stacks??? Or blowby tube ???

No coolant in the oil. Oil in the coolant. Engine has well over a million miles and never rebuilt. It blows smoke out the stacks. I start it up one time and it may not smoke. And then after parking overnight when I start it the next morning it smokes like crazy. Sometimes it smokes going down the road and sometimes it doesn't. I know this sounds crazy but this is what it is doing. It doesn't get hot. I guess I will just have to go through the motor. Thanks for all the help.

Sounds like you have a few issues going on .
If you have oil in your coolant that's almost always oil cooler . Oil presure is higher then water presure so it will put oil in your coolant .

If your engine has never been rebuilt it probley letting you know it's time to give it some lovin.
Smoke on start up depending on color could be headgasket or injectors themselves.
17 years and we'll over a million miles is above and beyond good service in my book.
Time for a inframe my friend.
