Portable guys mostly use Haenni wheel load scales. It takes a two man crew less than 10 min. to weigh a standard 18 wheeler. Haenni's are very accurate, and tough as nails to boot.

Think we need less government regulation, not more.

Well in light of what happened with Marten Transport recently and the new anti coercion laws that went into effect, some of these shippers do need to be held accountable when they knowingly try to pass an overweight load on to a driver. It isn't worth getting those fines and associated points on your license- regardless if your employer pays the overweight tickets or not.

Ok, so go to a certified scale and get weighed. Then return to the shipper if overweight.

    No fines, No points, Done.

    What am I missing???

What you're missing is that: 1. Some shippers WON'T take the shipment back after its left their custody(once it's left their facility, it's out of their hands) 2. In some areas certified scales aren't within easy reach, especially if you end up going thru a DOT scale house JUST TO REACH A CERTIFIED SCALE(I can think of a few places around Virginia & North Carolina that are living proof of that). And 3. Some shippers state that they won't LIGHTEN THE LOAD per the terms of the contract (see point# 2. for reference).

So then the answer is make every shipper install certified scales??? Overkill Much?

Point 1: so don't haul their $#!+ ... or don't haul for a company that wants to haul their $#!+ ... Or tell them it won't get shipped if they don't take something off. (push back, professionally)

Point 2: point taken ... but if that truly is the case, (overweight at dot with no scale between shipper and them) they might work with you in that specific case. (Maybe... If you get the right guy)

    Point 3: (see point 1)

So, I do see your point #2 (maybe), but the other two ... well ... there are more options than "get a ticket" or "install scales everywhere".

    With Respect,
    MD

It costs $200 or so in parts to have fairly accurate pressure gauges put on a truck AND trailer. Done, quit whining.
