I figure wherever I go as a newbie its going to suck In my mind if I can clear 5-600 bucks a week after taxes claiming 0 I will be happy. If not then its trial by fire to get the foot in the door thats why I would even consider CRE if I have to. A job is better than no job especially when it has a means to an end and its not just some dead end normal Idaho job making 9 bucks an hour to maybe be laid off in a week or a year.
Interested in the career

I get mostly nervous about the work history I dont know how strict they are in the trucking biz for these "bottom feeders" hopefully not having a long work history isnt an issue.
-
Dude just apply to some places, it takes very little effort. Then you'll know if the work history thing will be an issue. I had huge 1+year gaps in my work history and Swift didn't say anything. Also I wouldn't do a contract, see if a community college has classes.
-
Community college costs money that I do not have upfront, theres CWI close but its 5grand for tuition for the CDL course. I dont have 5grand to get a CDL... Student loan is not an option.
-
I look at it like this Ill do a contract and after several months 6+ ill put feelers out there and if my pay could be significantly better then Ill jump ship because alot of other companies have tuition reimbursement anyway and will pay it if you stay with them after the switch.
How does swifts training work though, once solo are you at the standard .36 cents a mile? Do you take money from each check to pay the tuiton? Id rather get on with one who just forgives the tuition after your contract not one that leeches more money form an already mediocre pay check.
I'll have to talk to a recruiter if they accept the app and find some more details on stuff out. Would suck if you only grossed like 600 in a week and they took out like 50 bucks a week for tuition. -
There are some companies that won't deduct money from your pay for the school, of course there is usually a 1 year commitment required. I already have a CDL, but am prepared to go through school again if it means getting on with a good company.
I am also a bit worried about my work history. Not because I haven't been working, but because I have been living overseas for the past 13 years and don't hold out much hope for recruiters making the extra effort to contact the foreign companies (only 2 really) I have worked for. Also, many companies here in the UK won't give references, they will just state the dates you worked for them and nothing else.
Which companies have you been thinking of?. I have a list of about 20 that I bookmarked, mostly because they offered school/refresher programs and they don't seem too many warnings to avoid them. -
I have to call the recruiter back for Swift in the morning, I missed her call today but she did email me. After training once you go solo you are paying back the training at $75 a week for 13months. I have not applied anywhere else yet as I want to see where this goes. I was wrong about the terminal my dad told me they had one here in Boise but he was wrong. They have one in Lewiston which is 260miles north and one in Utah 345 miles south. I dont know of any that have a terminal within 50miles.
Work history is the only thing that concerns me honestly. Im not worried about one speeding ticket and a fender bender that I didnt get ticketed for. -
Just wondering if anyone knows anything about how to get the state to pay for a private truck school?
I've read something about WIA is that the only program? Considering I have been "unemployed" most of my adult life Im sure I qualify but I read it could take months just to get them to look at your application. -
Usually that is through the Unemployment office, so by extension the Labor Dept. Try contacting them directly and ask what is availible
Sphene25 Thanks this.
