When I ran a non-cdl, class C straight truck years ago, I was required to have a medical card. Was pulled over a few times for inspections etc. And it was one of the first things the officer asked me for.

Just looked it up and you are right. I never had one when I was running a tow truck, but that's not interstate, so I guess that's the difference.

Its a leagalty thing, your engaged in comerce. So all possible laws and requirments apply. Med cards over 10 grand, cdl above 26 excc... big rig tow boys need a med card i belive. The private citizen dosent need one becuse there not doing comerce.

Yeah I wasn't big rig towing at the time, I was driving sub 26k trucks on a class c license, no interstate commerce, just intrastate stuff.

I was told by FMCSA that since I was only doing intrastate that all I needed was a usdot number no physical was needed.
But is there really any money in intrastate driving? -
Depends on what work is avalible, if you can get enough local work why not.

Hey I'm Marcus I'm in the same position you were last year I see. I'm new I'm going to be leasing a 26ft box truck with lift gate. Just wanted to get some feedback from any good carriers to link up with to earn some money. I'm not looking for any grumpy O/O to tell me not to get into because of what you've experienced I just want straight helpful answers thanks

I think with the straight truck guys it's a lot more stops and delivery type work. Or you might be leased on with like Prestige Courier or Bonnie Speed and you know there's a bunch of courier company's and what you would do is probably there night time linehaul. Like during the day say you work for a medical courier who delivers plastic totes full of whatever. Well during the day the delivery people are out most of those jobs are Chevy Astro Van-Ford Econoline type jobs so the delivery people go out during the day and make deliveries they drop off the full plastic totes and the hospitals, dyalisis clincs etc etc and then they pick up the empties.
So they get back to the little terminal there in the city and they load your box truck with empty totes and you can fit a good amount of totes in a 26ft box truck. Then at night you guys go off to the company who ever it is that owns the totes and packs them you would go off at night and go down probably 2-3 hours away to the companies factory or distribution center back into a dock have the empty totes unloaded from you and they will then load the full ones on and you would go back to the little terminal in the city unload the totes and in the morning the delivery couriers would come in and load there vans or cars and go off and make deliveries.
I do think though with straight truck work it's more local stops and you know fast pick up stuff or one hitter quitters you know we need 5 pallets picked up and shipped across town because someone made a paper work error. There's a lot of competition in that arena I think.
I mean you could lease on depending upon your equipment to an expedited company. If you were going to go out on your own and look for your own freight to haul it would be like any other small business at first real slow at first a lot of sitting around a lot of knocking on doors and handing out business cards. Eventually though you may find some small business or industry that has something steady for you and they might keep you fairly busy that's usually how it goes.Shire and Phillytrucks Thank this. -
