I have been to the Highlands terminal once. It is a very nice terminal and seems to stay very busy. You would need at least 6 months experience to be hired though.

 

No, when they changed us from percentage to mileage is when the migration to Hoffman started. Would've had to wait. The mileage rate we got then is exactly what they pay now. 48 and 30. Back in 1998, while not as good as percentage, 48 and 30 was good money. And, we got the miles. Did 59,000.00 every year. The rail roads have caught up, can't do that now.

 

Ah well I plan to apply with a year of experience just wanted to know what type of equipment they run. Seen a few kw's a few Petes. I drive a long hood already so it wouldn't be a big change.

 

Been reading through this thread. Lots of informative info.

I've been considering applying to A&R next spring. Would have about a year and a half of experience by then, and looking to try something other than slamming doors. Bulk hauling seems both parts fun and challenging.

Couple of questions though.
-I live in Missouri, and the closest terminal to me is in Decatur, IL. Would I still have a chance of being brought onboard? I'm not opposed to the idea of moving closer to my job, but I have a very nice living situation where I'm at, and I don't want to move unless I'm sure I won't be leaving my job anytime soon.

-How does the company handle minor repairs done by the driver? Do they reimburse you for money spent fixing the truck?

-Is running to Canada forced? My current company does do runs into Canada, but you aren't required to run there if you don't want to or don't have a passport.

-It seems that A&R has an assortment of equipment. When it comes time to get your own rig, do you have any choice, or is it just what's available at the time?

-It's been repeated several times that they will get you home, at the most, every two weeks. How long do they consider hometime? Is there a minimum/maximum consecutive days you can take off for hometime?

The new trucks are mid roof Cascadias and Volvos. The older trucks are the long nose Pete 379. Kenworth T660, Peterbuilt 386, and a few international pro stars.

 

1) We don't have a terminal in Decatur, The closest terminal to you would probably be Morris IL. There are a lot of guys at our Morris terminal that live out of state, If you call a recruiter they will let you know if they hire out of your area.
2) They don't expect you to do any repairs yourself. But if you do something simple like replace a light for example, you can buy it from a truck stop and they will reimburse you on your next check.
3) If you are a system driver (OTR) Running to Canada is optional.
4) As far as equipment its what is available at the terminal when you are hired. They gave me a choice between a Peterbilt 379 and a International Pro Star when I was hired. I chose the Pete.
5) They are very good about home time. I run regional and I am off every weekend. If you run over the road you basically put in a request when you want to be home and they will do it even if it means a long dead head. You would have to ask a recruiter or manager about the maximum days you can stay home. But they pretty much let you run how you want.

No problem, so far it has been a good company to work for. The training is really good and it is definitely a good way to get into dry bulk.

 

Hey DMAX, I've been in contact with A&R and would like to know which terminal would be better? I live on Eastern Long Island and am half way between Springfield Ma and Phily! I'm thinking Mass might be better for me. I've been driving almost 6 years, but almost all has been local dry van! What ya think my chances are? Oh, I drove a gas tanker in there for 8 months too!
