Let the market dictate what is made, who sells, and who buys.
Trade barriers against China and India could work both ways.thestoryteller Thanks this. -
I think that's inevitable and will happen whether any of us agree with it or not. We are a Made in China consumer group. That for sure. However, I have to wonder how, and what the net cost to our economy by being so really is. Afterall, when you buy something for a dollar from your neighbor, he will more than likely buy something from your other neighbor and it's likely that dollar will eventually come back to you. Send a dollar overseas? I don't know how or if it ever returns. I'm certain it doesn't at least at the consumer to consumer trade level. What are your thoughts on this? It has some long term bearing on your present occupation, does it not?
How so? Do we actually produce or manufacture anything besides food anymore? What do we export to India or China besides T-bills? This is an interesting discussion and as I just realized completely off-topic. I'd still like to get a differing opinion on this issue anyway.
(Zombi Woof, Sorry man! Mega-apologies! For the record and from what little I understand about this (which aint much) I see it as you do. The first year will be really rough and the need to focus on year two during year one can't be understated.)
Good luck, dood.

How about steel?
How about pharmaceuticals?
We still produce some of the finest automobile/trucks in the world
What about energy production and related products such as windmills, solar panels, inverters, batteries?
The US is far from being flat lined in manufacturing.
What we have to get used to is we are in a Global Market.
130 years ago when the Industrial Revolution was pumping away, most of the emerging nations that we now partner/compete with were still either stuck in the Middle Ages or the Stone Age.
We're part of the the reason (a huge part) why they now make that TV you watch or make that bike you ride. -
If you were a real trucker who hauls freight you would know that otherwise, what are we hauling back there, a full load of AIR?

Tiledood and mannmk7.........
The world evolves and changes....... you can't "stop" any of this ...... people (and countries) have to learn to use it to their advantage .........
complaining about any of this is not going to do anyone any good.
Reminds me of the "in my day we had to walk uphill, in the snow, both ways to school...."
why do many people think the "old days/ways" are the best days/ways?

Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -
I don't understand this comment. It sounds rude, however. I never claimed to be a trucker and I did ask these questions politely. To whom is this response addressed?
-
You brought up the "fact" that the US no longer manufactures products.
My point and not to be rude was to inform you otherwise, that we still are a significant manufacturing powerhouse in the world.
The "Air" comment was meant to be humorous and also informative as well. Otherwise, I for one am the luckiest S.O.B. driver out on the road getting paid to haul "Air".
/maybe that's why my Pete gets 15 miles to the gallon....ya think
