What stands out to me is you are willing to lose at least half your salary (most likely it is going to be more than half), so I am assuming you can live off only half, yet you only have 25k saved. Obviously we don't know the whole story with all the details.

I have always been someone who does what I want. Most people think I am nuts half the time, always making stupid choices etc.... but it has always worked out for me.

If you want to be an O/O, go for it. Of course I still think you are nuts, but what anyone thinks about you doesn't really matter unless it is your wife or kids.

True.. details aren't that important here. last year I was making 60k and doing just fine, we decreased our living expenses by purchasing a home and refinancing a cars. Not to mention paying off bills and loans. I think 25k in savings is not too shabby. I realize that all of you are making good points, which was the object of this post. Being away from home is not that bad with the ultimate goal of achieving my own business. Now I see everyone talking about keeping the job and staying here. We all just got hit with 40% pay cut and the BS that you have to deal with working in Mexico for the state oil company is ridiculous. we don't expect the company to keep the Americans employed much longer. That's the reason for looking for new prospects. Now I have a buddy here who went to trucking school after he bought his first truck, he paid 7 grand for it and another 1100 getting his authority and hauling logs. He makes four trips a day on his days off and pulls 300$ a load. That's 6 grand a week minus fuel and expenses. So telling me that it cannot be done or is very difficult is all fine and dandy, but until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes, you don't know what the road feels like.

Thank you all for the good insight and all the cautionary information. Guess its just something to think about more.

So... Schneider Choice... after following those threads from drivers there, that program looks to be pretty solid.. any thoughts on the matter?

Wouldn't say I'm an expect, still learning but have done my homework.
Main thing to know about leasing in my opinion is don't go someplace where you're paid by the mile and still have a dispatcher.
Go someplace where you're in control of how/when/where/what you do, picking your own loads and paid on percentage not the whole per mile scam.
As far as Schneider goes you have the benefit have hauling directly for Schneider customers vs dealing with brokers and work with a trailer pool with is a huge value at least for me.
If somewhere were to go to say Mercer.. ALL live load/unloads vs here where I could do all drop and hooks if I wanted to which saves tons of time and helps in trip planning.
Not that Mercer is bad.. them and Landstar I'd say are a step up on the path of becoming an O/O running under you're own authority.
I don't like brokers and I like point and click loads along with drop and hooks sooo I'm cool with where I am. Just me though.

That's why I am for sure leaning towards choice.
PPM doesn't seem to make as much sense as a % does in the long run... pick and choose loads. Succeed or fail. its all up to me.
And you can have this job! don't know how long you can keep it!

Ive been following the post you have freightwipper and between you and DFU I feel like I know you guys already... thanks for the points my friend!

Well I hope you realize you'll be taking a pay cut by becoming a truck driver.
Not to say you can't earn $100k+ after expenses but you surely will work for it.

No I am aware of that... last year wasn't making but 60k... we didn't do what most people do and overextend ourselves and get toys.. we actually paid down bills, refinanced high notes and quit throwing money away on rent. I realize that it wont be the 250K a year that all these ads on craigslist is promising, but ive got a good head on my shoulders and my wife is a whizz with saving money... pretty confident itll all work out.. and if it all blows up in my face, Im an electrician... theres always going back to tradework

Those Craigslist ads mean gross, gross don't mean crap to me.
Some drivers care about reaching a revenue amount per day... i don't work like that either.
What's left over after fuel and expenses is what matters to me.
Money ain't everything, real question is what lifestyle will make you happy?
I came here for the lifestyle more so than the money.
No more being a company driver never again, nope.
