My suggestion was base on the fact that the OP is looking for his first serious radio, for that matter i was suggesting something simple.
Because there is no doubt that the RCI2970N2 is a serious radio, i had one few years ago & i really enjoyed it.
I am now using a president lincoln2 and so far i like it.
Need a radio suggestion (First "big" radio purchase)

The 2970N2 is a bit big of a radio to run in a company truck, where you're generally not allowed to have anything wired directly to the battery. I don't know if the OP drives a company truck, but if he does, he likely won't be able to pull off running a 2970N2, which is why I recommended the Stryker 955.
Ougigoug Thanks this. -
That's also why I suggested the Stryker 955. You can use the stock wiring and you only need a 15A fuse. The 955 also has VFO as well.
-
The only notable exception I can think of, is if you are in a truck with an APU, and a big (1800+) sine wave inverter, you could get a power supply and run the radio through the inverter. Efficiency penalty, but in theory it would be do-able.
But I love the #### out of my 955, so I would just do that. -
Look I am going to get crap about this but don't waste your money, find another cobra, simple 29 or what ever have it tuned properly by someone who knows what they are doing and go through your entire system to make sure it all works.
All of these radios mentioned are not all that great, they have broad front ends and poor rejection.darthanubis Thanks this. -
Not true, when tuned properly they are great radios. You can have a 29 and if not tuned correctly it will be horrible.

Sounds like the OP wants a loud radio but is not into SSB.
Something not super expensive and easy to use..
Maybe something like a General Lee,Connex or Galaxy...
I have a Galaxy 94hp.......Love that radio and my old Galaxy 44V......still blows smoke for over 20 years old.darthanubis and Ougigoug Thank this. -
And so can these other radios, it really doesn't make much difference in reality, they are made to capture maximum money, not maximum performance.darthanubis and rabbiporkchop Thank this.

Have you actually used a Stryker 955 to know, or are you just going by hear-say and/or lumping it in with other escorts and deciding that if one is crap, they all must be?
Because I've used many a Cobra, and my 955 is better than all of them, in every way imaginable...other than not having weather band.kelgar50 Thanks this. -
Good looking radio. But I've never paid that much for a radio. I buy used ones. If I find one for a good price, I will give one a try based on your recommendation.
