Good information on this thread. Thanks guys.

Businesses got hammered badly in Q3 of this year. I belong to a Facebook group of o/o with their own authority and a fleet owner posted a link showing average Q3 earnings for independents was $1.18 incl. fuel, which is well below what most operations require to turn a profit.
-
Can you post the link?
-
I misspoke when I said he posted a link, I looked at it again and he just summed up in what he read, so he could be wrong.
I did find this link: http://www.joc.com/trucking-logisti...yed-counterparts-economist-says_20151014.html
Don't be fooled by the headlines, the numbers are anything but encouraging. I didn't see an exact rate per mile, but the average overall earnings of independents quoted by the author (in Oct 2015) hardly appear to justify the risk/level of investment.
I am on the company driver side right now, running team, and each of us are netting more than the average independent according to these numbers with $0 invested and minimal risk.Truckee1 Thanks this. -
What about just signing up with a company like HVH or someone like that? There is a mechanic in our shop that used to run under his own authority. (he did car transport) he made it sound like it wasn't very hard to get own authority but his big advantage is he knows how to turn a wrench

Must be some rat hole mc like Warner, JB or Schneider, etc.
Paying "o/o" rates of $1.30 or less and bragging about it. LOL -
It was the earnings report for independents, ie o/o with their own authority, not leased into the big guys.
I don't need to look at Schneider or Swift's numbers to know their o/o and l/o are earning more than 1.17 including fuel. Plus, those companies are power-only and this discussion pertained to o/o booking their own freight in their own trailers.Milkman719 Thanks this. -
You can look up national average rates online and they're way above $1.18 average. I'm gonna have to pull the BS flag on that. Somebody either thinks they're a O/O or in they are in a really horrid area.
