I like to think my L/P is different, or at least the best one can get, if one has to L/P... I liken my L/P to that of a person finding a fellow with a truck, and talking the guy into selling him/her the truck on payments. Now in that example the driver has more freedom than I have, because that driver can take the truck he/she is making payments on, and lease it on to whom ever, or,get his/her own authority. I can not take my truck anywhere until I have made the last payment, nor can I use it to get my own authority. Other than that, which is a lot, I have all the other freedoms. I pay everything, I fix the truck I am making payments on, and the trailer as well. I find my own loads, book my own loads and negotiate my own rate. The carrier I am with files my IFTA, Plates, HVUT and carry's my fuel until the end of the week. I get 82% of the LH and that is it in a nutshell. I have the most respect for those that did it the right way but, my way is the way I did it and if it don't work out, I will hang it up. I am hell bent on making it work and so far, it has,,though it hasn't been easy. I have complaints about the carrier I drive under but, that is all part of it. I have 21 months to go and the truck and trailer will be titled in my name and at that point my truck will have between 600,000 and 650,000 miles. My truck is a Fitzgerald Glider,, freightliner Coronado with the 12.7 a 2012 The trailer is an East 48' Step and it is a 2011. So far, neither have given me any problems and with no emissions, I don't expect any...

I am one of those that didn't use the sense God gave me during the first half of my life and since joining the Military I have started to change my ways but there was no way a bank was going to give me a loan on a brand new truck. I didn't deserve that kind of break, never been in business, though I always wanted to be. I still have work to do but, I have come a long way.

Most that take on a L/P don't take it serious enough, they will argue they do but, they really don't. I spent more than 5 years learning all I could about being in business as a Trucker before I signed my Lease Agreement, and yes I did read my Lease Agreement. I take what I am doing very serious, my future as well as my wife's depend on it. If I fail, it will be because the small carrier I am with failed or, the SHTF!

There is a long thread on here started by a Prime Tanker L/O who started with some college training in business administration. He failed rather miserably and as an outsider looking in for two reasons, first he took whatever load he was dispatched no matter what it was and he was totally focused on fuel mileage to the point of driving as slow as 50 mph!
The number one goal has to be revenue over the course of a month, not each run. One thing I learned studying business was the story of the Packard car company. The last year they were in business, the made more profit per car than any other car company, but they didn't sell enough cars to stay in business.
