The biggest confusion is that the definition of "commercial" in commercial vehicle is different from state to state and for the Feds, and totally different from commercial drivers license. Those requirements also vary from state to state.

yeah, i know. and who actually reads and follows those signs. to which, most people won't.

my dad moved from indianapolis. with one of the BIG uhaul trucks. my uncle drove it. i told him he'd have to stop. he asked uhaul and they told him no. so he didn't go through one scale.

Any law enforcement officer can stop you if they see the obvious. But they may not be able to right you a ticket. Florida just had the merger of FHP and DOT a while back. Dot will pull over cars and Fhp will pull over trucks. It was crazy for a while to see a dot car behind a 4 wheeler.

Bdog: You may have looked like some one trying to skate around the rules.
A government employee told me a song and dance about laws allowing inspections of vehicles that could possibly transport illegals. There is no law for stopping a vehicle for possible wrong doing. However if it can be pulled over for some other reason that type thing can be checked at the same time. As a legal emigrant pointed out to me" land of the free, haw".
    America is still the best!

Vehicle markings like "Not for hire" have no meaning around here. Waste of paint.

Who has to pull in the scales is based SOLELY on registered weight. In commerce or not.
