I went to 4CDL over at Thomas Nelson; while I don't believe they are the best I do feel they are not the worst. The three you listed all are very good schools in the area, I choose 4CDL because they knocked a $1000.00 off of tuition because I paid cash. They do teach to the licensing for sure but like others have said the real training starts when you go out with your trainer.

For everyone else, I don't post much but have read on this site for months and have taken in a lot of information which all is much appreciated; I only chose to apply to one company which in about two hours from now I am heading out on my first run; I will be driving for Givens Transportation out of Chesapeake, VA. I have always wanted to work there when I retired, so this past May I retired from the Fire department after 30 years and took some time to chill and and enjoy life for a few months and then set my sites on Givens and low and behold here I go.

Just noticed this is an old post, sorry! I hope you made a decision and followed through with it on a company.

Does Givens normally hire new CDL grads? I know some companies make exceptions at times for older or retired applicants. Is it an intermodal company?
Want to look at the website, but can't get it to open. Thanks.

In recent they have been hiring out of school but seems to be more so for their O/O that run the ports. As for company driver I don't think that holds true as much, I was fortunate in that I used to do fire plans on their buildings for years and kind of had a small foot in the door and knew what they did on their weekly runs and so forth. Turnover is very low and they let the drivers do their job instead of micro managing, a big plus

    ZnJsdad .....

How are you enjoying Givens. I too am a former firefighter ......From the federal side at NOB...I also did fireplanning...inspections, education etc.

Did a lot of research and found Givens to be a CHOICE employer.....excellent equipment with a 90-95% KW fleet.....great co workers and management.

I applied and hopefully will get a road test this week.

Loving it, I just got my assigned truck yesterday and will be making my first solo run Monday morning. Everyone has been great and haven't met a person yet that I would put on my crap list. Givens is all about their employees so you will love it, especially if your not looking to run tons of miles. The last couple of weeks I ran right about 2000 miles each week and was home for both weekends by Friday morning.

Look forward to seeing you there!
