My d.h. has type 2 diabetes. He's on 3 different meds to keep it under control. Those that have diabetes how do you keep yours under control? How do you manage the hi's and low's? My husband has very rarely had a low and it's been at home so I've gotten "Baby get me something sweet quick!" He eats regularly so we dont' know why those ever happened. The last time he went to the specialist they talked about putting him on some insulin that does not have hi's and low's like the old time insulin did. He was all worked up about d.o.t. codes and rules and such so he opted for a 3rd pill instead. Oh and get this.
There is a diabetes injectible medicine made from the spit of hela monsters! :smt064 How in the world do they get those Hela monsters to spit?

My brother has been a diabetic since the age of ten and he is on 3 shots a day. He has been off the old insulin for a couple years now and it has really helped him. The units of insulin he takes now is based on what he eats. I don't really understand it but it has helped him. He was always going low and high, but alot of it had to do with what he was eating. Plus he would take his shot and not eat like he was suppose to but he has a good wife now that cracks the wipe on him alot. I wish you guys the best its not the easiest to deal with at times.

What is d.h.? Are you all ballplayers and have a designated hitter? I see it bring used all the time and never could figure out what everyone was talking about.
Now that I've exposed my ignorance on modern culture you may not believe what I have to say on diabetes. What do you mean by highs and lows? When are you taking readings? I'm on 500 mg of metformin 3x a day. My readings before eating are 100-120, 2 hours after eating 145-155. I haven't had any real low readings in awhile. I used to occasionally get readings in the 70-80 range for no reason I could figure out. Exercise is extemely important as is losing weight if you are fat (I am and working on it). Eating 3 moderate sized meals with small snacks in between will help to even things out. Exercising and watching what you eat is a pain but not as big a pain as kidney failure, going blind, or having limbs cut off, all a result of uncontrolled diabetes. I was diagnosed last August with a blood sugar reading of 402. I look on my diagnosis as a blessing as it was a wake-up call to my unhealthy life style. -
Oh d.h. stand for dear husband. The diabetes specialist wants my husband's blood sugar to be under a certain amount after meals. I don't know the exact number. He has to make sure to keep snacks in his truck in case he feels like his sugar is getting low. He'll feel shakey, sweaty, etc. He has had dangerous lows at home a couple of times like under 60 where he felt shakey, sweaty, etc.

Byetta originated from the spit of the Gila monster, however it is not an insulin product and is allowed by DOT. They do not actually use lizard spit, it is a protein from the spit that is duplicated in a lab, much the same way Human Insulin is not collected from Human's but is duplicated in a lab. The byetta works very well for type 2 diabetes control under the direction of a good General Practioner or Endocrinologist. The most amazing thing about the Byetta is that it actually repairs/protects the pancreas somewhat and creates new beta cells over time. I highly recommend it to any driver facing a DOT physical that cannot currently control their diabetes with older medications. I have a family member that takes it and he was facing giving up his CDL because of poor blood sugar control and his oral meds have been cut way back and his blood sugar is in good control with the Byetta. He also lost 20 pounds on the Byetta and that in turn also helps with the type 2 diabetes. The byetta signals the stomach that it is full, besides the blood sugar control and so far has been proven a very safe medication to take.blessedwith3boys Thanks this.
