If your driving there truck then your an employee. If you have your own equipment, pay for your own gas, maintenance , oil changes and haul loads for them then your a sub contractor. Sounds like a shady company to me. I would find someone else to work for that's legit.

In 1989 I worked for a guy that had 15 trucks. He paid all of us as sub Contractor's. I worked there 5 months. And will say I did not breath easy until after 7 years later. Always figured IRS was going to audit the company. Then all the drivers were going to find out we owed lots of cash.
Never let that happen again for sure. I did run trucks for years, where I was paid 25% before expences. I did work on the truck like it was mine. Did not get any pay other then the 25%. And Made good money doing it. But the owner took care of all taxes and stuff. But I did know what each job was paying before it started. He did not try to keep us in the dark. And the few times a job paid more then we thought . He always paid us our % of it.
