I am getting new steers next week at my local guy back home. Right now I'm running Michelin XZA3 tires. They're about 2 years old but down to 6/32 after only about 70,000 miles. Now to be fair, the first 15-20,000 was hauling oil on a lot of gravel and crappy highways. And the last 50,000 was mostly highway...hauling flatbed. The wear is pretty even...no cupping. Just seemed to wear quick. Especially for the price of those tires (about $1850 installed and balanced). I've got new shocks on the front and it doesn't pull at all so I think the alignment is pretty good.
I'm considering getting Yokohama steers this time for about $400 less than the XZA3's and throwing Centramatics on at the same time to see if I can get more mileage out of the tires.
My question is....when you put Centramatics on with new tires....should you still balance the new tires? Or will the Centramatic do it for you?

I would think the centramatics should take care of it. I put them an all 3 axles on my last truck, was quite happy with the results

Its a good idea to spin balance them and also use the centramatics.
But do not use the products (Equal, Tru Balance) that you put inside the tires and balance them. Just one or the other with those products.

I've purchased my tires from the same guy for 20yrs, he says all you need is a good spin balance. A good quality tire should take no more than 2-4oz tops.
If you want to put centramatics on, don't forget your Turbo 3000 and your Air Tabs!
I buy Hankook AL11 for steers and they only took 2oz at time of install-$420 dismount, mount & spin balance.

Yeah...to compare apples to apples....I was talking Canadian dollars so it would be about $525 USD each for the Yokos (installed and machine balanced) The CND is not worth much right now. I was thinking about grabbing the tires in the US when I'm there but after exchange and duties...it would probably be the same or more than my local guy.
As far as the Centramatics...I can see how they could be beneficial. I drive where theres a lot of snow/ice and can build up in the rims. If the Centramatic works like others have said from their experience (and in theory).....they should keep your tires balanced even with ice/snow build up inside the rim. Thats the way I see it anyway.

What do you think happens when 1 or some of those ball bearings stop moving?
Either bc of rust or frozen in place.
You say, but I can still hear them rolling when I drive slow. Sure, you can hear some of them rolling, but what if just 1 is rusted in place or frozen.
Being in Canada, I would think the possibility of some or all being frozen one morning. Yikes!
Now maybe the balls are stainless, but what about the ring they ride in.
Have you researched these in depth?

You bring up a great point. I have researched them and that was the one thing that I was wondering about as well.
They are filled with oil. I drive in -30 to -40 quite abit in the winter. How thick does that oil get in extreme temperatures. I was going to call tomorrow and ask what the cold flow properties of their filler oil is. If they don't know and don't have a spec sheet of some kind....then I guess I won't be buying them.

"he says" well he's right for NEW tires..... but the balance will change over time... if you want to PAY to spin balance your tires every 50,000 miles then go for it.... don't believe me take your 50k plus mile tires and have them spin balanced again and see just how much they have changed.....

I have them on with my XZA3s. I'm down to 13/32 on just over 200k miles. I have averaged 250-300k miles per set of tires when using centramatics. And I always get my tires balanced.
