My sister is seeing a Swift trucker and he is telling her that she can get her CDL permit, then Swift will get her a CDL license in 3 weeks and it will be "free" if she works out a contract for an unknown amount of months. He has only been driving since May of this year (new driver) and is saying that they will allow him to train her. I have no doubts that they will probably allow it in order to get another indentured servant, but has anyone heard it being done this way? My husband and I didn't do the CDL training through a company so I am clueless on how it works and I'm having trouble finding a clear answer. Any light on the subject is greatly appreciated.

I believe that if you go to one of the swift driver academies, they deduct X amount of money out of your check for 13 months. Then for 13 months, they pay money back to you.
If you pay cash, they reimburse the tuition in full six months after you go solo.

A swift driver has a girlfriend?!

    That's amazing.

OP, You anwsered your own question when you said indentured servitude.

I can't break down how it works with swift but nothing is free and recruiters lie.

I'm aware, and yes, it is amazing. lol But I'm just wanting a straight answer and how it actually works so I can call bullshlt on it. Because talking to a recruiter to get answers are well... Useless. This is to gather information for my sister's sake so just maybe she will not be stuck as a slave to a company who tells their drivers to duct tape a bumper back on after it has been dragged off. o_O (And considering he didn't learn enough about how to back a truck up without dragging the bumper off somehow in his 3 week CDL training course, this is for the safety of the public. I've seen my sister drive a four wheeler and it's terrifying to see how she will drive a truck without someone actually teaching her.) I know it's unheard of to care enough about another person's future to inquire about the details of how something actually works, but unfortunately, I do. It's a curse...

Not sure on specifics but i do know some of the megas will look over there driving history and allow them to be trainers with only 6 months or so behind the wheel. Its a shame.

Swift will send her to a CDL school when she gets her permit and train her for her CDL in three weeks. She will have to have funds for transfer of her permit to the state that the school is in and then transfer of it back to her home state after she gets her CDL. There are some other small costs also and sometimes students have to pay for lodging. No schools include food that I know of but I could be wrong. The normal cost is $3900.00. Swift will send her to school so she doesn't have to foot the bill. They require a 13month contract in order to do that. During the first 13months she will pay $37.50 week. If she stays another 13months on top of that Swift will pay her $37.50 per week for the last 13 months making the school free. That is a total of 26 months.

As far as her boyfriend being her mentor I'm not sure about that. I believe that to be a mentor at Swift you must have 6 months of experience, 100% on time delivery, and no preventable accidents during that time frame. So if he has been there since May and has an accident I don't believe that he can be a mentor, but I may be wrong.

    Hope that helps.

Swift will occasionally waive their trainer requirements to allow a driver train someone like a family member or spouse.
If she wants her boyfriend to be her trainer, have it in writing. Not because swift won't honor it but because it's a huge company and it'll likely come down to a "he said, she said" matter that is hard to enforce.

Your sister and her Swiftie should change companies.
Other companies furnish meals during CDL school portion of training.
They should both look at Earl Henderson Trucking. She will get a private hotel room plus meals plus $100.00 cash weekly for extra food is she wants it. This cash is free; don't have to pay it back. He can be her trainer there. Trucks have APU, refrigerator, Satellite tv hookups, seats that heat and cool. New drivers start out at .38 cpm. No cameras either.

Swift can also hear their "sweet nothings" talk and cell phone conversations if they want to.
