And I'm betting the guy that hauled them doesn't speak English and you need a tetanus shot just from looking at the truck.

Aren't the rates very low coming out of Florida? A friend O/o gets down there for decent money but is lucky to get $1/mile coming back to the Midwest. He pulls a dry van.

FL CA and TX are three of the states that are normally not good at all to come back out of rate wise.
As far as stating earlier about the 2000 to 3000 mile trips, not a lot of that happening in the car haul world.
Yes there is a few that go coast to coast but most of the car haul work is regional.
$3.00 a mile is 1995 rates, well at least that is as far back as I go to know about. Too many carriers and whoever constantly beat the rates down to the point that a few that have come into car hauling got out of it due to the fact the money didn't equal the risk.

It is kind of sad what is happening to the car hauling industry. An honest man could make an honest living, but now with all these dullies the rates have have hit rock bottom

An idiot is an idiot no matter what he is pulling or pulling with. I almost would bet that the problem lies more with the 6-7 car and cheap stinger crowd, that think they have to be full no matter where they go.

Best statement in this thread is that everyone needs to get the backhaul idea out of thier head. Now everyone wants the backhaul rate and we have rates in the toilet, imagine that

I agree, any business that competes solely on price is a business you do not want to be in. We have been with the same group of customers for 14 years now, run dedicated lanes at headhaul rates in all directions (with some seasonal variation). As true independents we have more control over pricing, but also much more cost and risk in general. I would love an increase, every time I make headway some low baller comes in and we go back 5 years until they run themselves out of the industry and I get a small increase to go back to what I am doing. We have 2, 4, and 7 car carriers and I also think a lot of the "7 car" crowd is hurting the industry. It is too easy to hitch a high mount up to a road tractor and haul cars for dry van rates, then the customers begin to expect those rate levels and when the company realizes they can't run a hauler for those rates they just go back to general freight, but the damage is already done.
