Company turned me down because it's been more than 3 months since I got my license ... suggested refresher course (they don't offer that) ... Is that pretty standard, is it now not possible for me to get a job because I waited too long, and now must take a refresher somewhere. ?

I'm almost surprised that ANY company will let you drive if you've been out of the truck more than 15 minutes. You either know how or you dont.

some companies want you working asap after graduation. I think they must feel you lose something from what you learned. can you go back for a quick refresher..?? it'll cost you however.

I was out of school a few months and most companies stated they required a refresher course. Cost of refresher was $1500. Decided to keep looking and found a company that agreed not to require me to take the refresher course but they gave me two separate driver tests with different trainers. Suggest you check other companies but just be prepared to take a driver's test with a company who agrees to waive the school requirement. I honestly don't think going back through another week of truck school would have made a difference anyway and most companies will require a driver test regardless I would think. I think you will find that driving in the real world is much difference than truck school driving anyway particularly regarding backing. In truck school, most of the backs are planned and repeated and in the real world almost all are different.

In my opinion school only teaches you to pass the cdl tests, not much more. My first driving job, where I still work, had no training or road test at all. I drive local in chicago, first day on the job they handed me keys and paperwork and said go make these deliveries. Was not ready for that, but I sure did learn fast, learned more first day on the job doing it in the real world than I did in school.

I have read driver ads that say you must of graduated within 6 months so there definitely are companies that will hire you. It really doesn't matter that much since you are going to be out with a trainer for weeks anyway.

I agree that there are companies that will still hire him. But not everyone gets a trainer. Several people I went to school with, including myself, got jobs that had no training. Most were local. 2 students even got a job teaming together otr straight out of school. Small companies are a whole differant world than big ones.
