Because I'm leaving for Alaska this Sunday I didn't have time to order anything so I followed the advice in post #6 and put together a dipole set up. Was the most reasonable solution to my problem. I plan on fastening the setup to the drivers mirror arm with heavy duty zip ties and gorilla duct tape.

I'll have a down day in Fairbanks Saturday of next week and may find time for an update. If it stays on from Anchorage to Fairbanks and works OK and doesn't fall off it will be good for the rest of the trip. Stay tuned for a further update.

If you don't have a toad, try using the trailer hutch.

    FURTHER UPDATE:

The dipole solution was not a solution to anything. I thing because the mirror bracket didn't reach far enough out to get the antennas away from the body more than a couple of inches. Lesson learned, DON'T BOTHER.
