That's because the winter road maintenance plan in the South is: God put it there, God will take it away. Sometimes He isn't in a hurry. Like I've said, it ain't all misery. Once the bald tires and uses-plain-water-for-antifreeze crowds make it to the ditches, it's real easy to get around.

That storm in the quoted link hit mid-day while everyone was at work, then came through quick and the roads were icy before a million people attempted to do their evening rush hour. If I recall, there was a chain of failures that day, starting with the national weather service guessing wrong, then 5 layers of state government trying to cover up the fact that the pooch was already screwed before they finally mobilized what little snow/ice equipment they have.

My recent favorite was about 4 yrs ago. We got about 4-5" of snow. It got up to around 34º that day, so it just started to become a slushy mess before dark. While the neighbors were out making snowmen and playing, I was shoveling my driveway. I went across the street and did my neighbor Russian Mike's too, as he's about 70 and him and his younger but still old girlfriend aren't in the best of health for that. The next morning it was about 20º and we were the only two on the street able to back out our driveways and get anywhere.
