Let's say someone had back surgery a couple month's ago (herniated disk) but has been fully released by surgeon. Would they:

    A. Have to disclose this to a perspective company?

    B. If they do, would they have even the slightest chance of getting hired?

    C. When taking a DOT physical for a perspective company and this is disclosed on the long form and to the doctor, is this info given to the company by the doctor?

    Thanks!

Some employers require a spine x-ray. This protects them from pre-existing injuries and deterioration due to aging.

I assume any doctor will forward all of his findings to the employer. That is what they are paying him to do.

Is your back surgery on record with previous employers? It is difficult to find certain types of work with a history of back trouble, and difficult to prove an employer discriminated against you.

It's not on record with any employers, no workers comp, etc. Happened right after finishing school and getting license.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it involved workman's comp or asked you specifically about back surgeries. If they ask about back surgeries, you have to be honest, or you may lose your job.
Now that you have had the surgery, you should be better than before! Explain that to them if they ask!

If you answer the questions honestly on your DOT physical, obviously it'll be noted by the doctor on your long form, which most, if not all employers require. If you don't disclose it, they probably won't find out if you never give them reason to. But should anything happen to bring this into question, they (the company and your insurance company) will do some research and it will not go well for this person. As far as elligibility for hire goes, I'd agree with the last post. I have to say I'm suprised that a doctor would clear you (I'm sorry, anybody...) just two months after herniated disc surgery, but take you (sorry. them) at their word. I hope your recovery goes well. :biggrin_25525:

I already have a 2-year medical card from before. Are there any companies that don't require you to re-take the physical. I imagine that's my only hope.

I am not sure of the ramifications of it, but my husband had the same surgery he now has donor bone in his back. When he went to Werner, they did the dot physical of course, and they simply asked him what happened there, he told them, and they did not require anything. The only reason I can think of is his is 14 years old. He has applied for several local driving jobs, and they have all told him even though he has a current card they said he would have to pass with there doctor. I wish I had some better info for you, all I have to go on is previous experiences. Good luck I hope it all works out for you!:biggrin_25517:

My advice is to put it on the app. I have a back problem from a truck accident. Any I was getting a new medical card and the DR saw I didn't have full range in my back. and of course I put on my info. Anyway they called the company and when I got back they told me that they were going to have to let me go because i lied on my app. I asked for the app and turned it over and pointed at what I had noted about my back. their answer was oops We are sorry we made a mistake. And that was that, they left me alone. If I hadn't put it on my app I would have been out looking for a new job.
PUT IT IN WRITING AND COVER YOUR BUT!!!!

I'm now trying to get back into a truck. I had the left shoulder rebuilt in 2003. And everyone sees it on the app also the back problem. DON'T HIDE IT!
I know it will take me a little longer then most to get back on the road. But it will happen.
