I'm driving an '07 Freightliner with a Detroit Series 60. Oil pressure has been consistent at about 50 psi at operating rpm's. A couple of weeks ago the pressure spiked to close to 60 psi for a day and a half after starting it cold with outside temperature of 50°F.

After that episode the oil pressure dropped back to normal. No oil leaks or drop in the amount of oil.

This isn't my truck, but I take care of all issues for the owner because this gig is a one trick pony. Any thoughts on why there would be a temporary spike in oil pressure?

Cold oil always creates more pressure till it gets warm

True that. But I've had plenty of cold starts with this truck before and after this event without spiking the pressure. I'm mostly concerned that the 60 psi maintained for a day and a half even after getting to operating temperature.

If you don't see any leaks and you haven't lost any oil then it's probably nothing to worry about, but definitely keep an eye on it.

Like a hawk. I'm thinking a temporary blockage, which conjures bad images of the possibilities.

I thought about that and even considered suggesting changing the oil, but since it went back to normal and you have found no problems I would just watch it for a while to make sure it doesn't happen again.

It's BAAACCCKK!? Just restarted with water temperature at 120°F and brought idle up to 1100 rpm and oil pressure is at 58 psi.

Just got a dispatch, so I have to run today. However, tomorrow I'll do an early oil change and have them run an oil analysis.

Brother, I've got a 600 hp Det 60 in my truck.. with freightliner, most often the gauge and the actual oil pressure is off.. If you hook up a scan gauge to the ECM port and check what the ecm is actually reading, will tell you the true oil pressure..
My Det. when cold will average 55 to 58 pounds of oil pressure and when good and warm at Idle, it will average 35 to 40 pounds of oil pressure..
    Hope this helps..

    HeWhoMustNotBeNamed and Lepton1 Thank this.

Have you recently changed the type of oil or filter you put on your truck?

How many miles? ever rebuild? ever oil sampled? maybe she's just getting a little more broke in this year.
