    Picture 009.jpg Hi folks,

I'm driving a 2015 model 389 daycab. Has twin mirror mounted whip antennas, was just wondering if anybody knew off hand whether both antenna whips go through a junction box to provide signal for the AM/FM stereo or if it is set up for left hand goes to CB and right hand goes to AM/FM or vice versa.

I realize I can take the headliner down and trace the coax cables but was wondering if somebody has gone down that road. I'm asking because I'm planning to upgrade antennas and coax along with radio and didn't know if I would need to upgrade single antenna or a co-phase setup. Also if it has splitter for AM/FM that will limit the amount I turn up the replacement radio's power.

It's probably multiplexed, so both antennas handle the CB and AM/FM. We have several 379's and 388/389's that came with 2 CB antennas and no AM/FM. Both antenna's run to a box above the CB mounting plate. That box then splits it to a separate CB and AM/FM wire. If you pull the plastic plate above the CB mount off, you'll see a small box in there where every hooks up.

If you plan on upgrading coax, keep in mind that the standard size connector will not fit through the mirror brackets, you need the tiny ones, even then, they are hard to get through. They put a lot of wires through those brackets. Ours are loaded with mirror turn signals, Moto heated mirror and heated spot mirrors and coax. On the drivers side, the sat/nav antenna and outside temp sensor in the mirror add even more wires. I dread when I have to fish a wire through that bracket, especially the sat/nav wires. They put the biggest plugs on that. You have to take almost every other wire out to fit the plug ends through, then put all the other wires back in.

I'm glad you mentioned that, I had not thought about the other wires in there. That does make sense. So you recommend removing the other wires to get the coax through? I'd probably solder on a new connector if I did this. I take it you've been down this road more than once?

If you're going to put the ends on after you install coax, you'll be fine. We get new OEM coax through without taking other wires out, but it's tight and the OEM has very small connectors. You'll never get the standard size connector on that goes to the CB. I have only had to remove wires to get the big satellite plugs through 1st. Yeah, I've been down that road too many times, we have 17 of those trucks now and it seems like every time a driver changes trucks it needs antennas. Car haulers get crappy satellite reception, so they they are always messing with that antenna and break them.

Getting the wires through and routed neatly is a pet peeve of mine. I hate when drivers just zip tie wires along the mirror bracket and through the door.

Agreed! I'll gladly spend some time routing the coax through the mirror brackets. Thank you for the advice @GrapeApe !!

CB coax is separate from radio. Radio has its own antenna.

Not always, if the truck cam equipped with a multiplexer, there is no AM/FM antenna or wire.

I pulled the cover from the overhead where the CB is bolted in, ours has the mutliplexer. Also has no exterior AM/FM antenna anywhere on roof.
