Here are a few things to think about. Where is the aftertreatment going to go under the truck? Will you have to have custom brackets made or can you modify some that are already out there? The wiring is the big one. DEF lines if you want to use that new of a system. Those are the hardest to get and are looking at an 8 week lead time from when you order custom lengths and fitting sizes. I been a witness to it for the past 8 years. The biggest thing that you will run into with the older non emission engines are finding what you will need for the engine to communicate with the dash. The newer models are J1939 from about 2007 and newer. The older ones are J1587? I may be wrong on that number. Like I said it can all be done but don't expect it to be out of the shop in less than 1 month. If you are just one emissions level off it is so much easier to retrofit to the newest engine since most of the items that you are needing are already there in one form or another. The wiring down the road will drive you crazy. You will be chasing the gremlins on those that only happen once every 1,000 miles. I unfortunately have gotten better at finding these gremlins. I knowing what I know would not do it.

Gardner Trucking in California runs Argosy gliders with dpf retrofits on a variety of engines. They have to have a cabover to legally haul their fleet of 57' trailers in state...

    J1708.

I wonder if it would be feasible to build a glider with a 1939 system to where you could set it up to only where the essential components need to be multiplexed? I mean, there's no reason you need the wiring for things like power windows, windshield washer pumps, or even lights to have to go through a chassis node in order to function.

There's a place that advertises in Log Trucker that has "repower clips" with newer engines. I can look when I get home and post what they're advertising.

Unless you are intimately in love with your old truck the $$$ won't make sense. I would think you would have problems finding shops to work on such a modified truck with the California laws and EPA nutty heads around. **
Buy the best CARB compliant truck you can afford.

** This was joke and I love the EPA, and the IRS. xoxoxo

What would be more realistic, but older truck cheap, have engine and transmission rebuilt, on engine? Do a complete rebuild not just a inframe, forget about the other crap

I can see why they see that is a better investment than taking the risk on a new truck with all the emissions crap on them. '03-'06 trucks in good condition are fetching $60-$75K on the used market, the same as '11-'12 models with the new stuff on them.

Only truck that I've seen for that kind of money? Have been heavy haul truck, the average truck that's 10 years old will have close to if not more than a million miles, if they are not heavy haul set up truck? And someone pays that kind of money, just not very educated IMO
