I'm driving a 10 wheel dump for a small asphalt company in CR. We have around 20 employees including laborers. I also haul equipment to and from job sites every day. It would get you familiar with the basics of securement. If you don't mind getting dirty and swinging a hammer some days give it a look in your area. If you weren't on the other side of the state I would see about getting you in here but a 2 hour drive each way and an average 14 hour day might be a bit rough. I'd recommend calling all the asphalt and concrete guys around you and see what they say. It will at least get your foot in the door and some experience and you'll be home every night.

I want to try and give PGT a shot for northeast regional flatbed. Hard to Male my decision doing the pros and cons run dry van ne regional now. Love the home time and the family like atmosphere where it feels they actually care about there drivers. Wondering if it would be the right move to try PGT and be home every weekend

Don't know much about PGT but other "home every weekend" drivers get 34 hours off and are back on the road. Better than OTR but not exactly a whole weekend. Either way, not knowing much about PGT is kind of a good thing. No news is good news. I have heard that they pay percentage of the trucks gross revenue and each truck has a minimum each week. That would imply that you get a minimum each week no matter what. Which sounds better than mileage pay in my opinion. Don't know for sure if that is true. Just a confirmed rumor

Thanks for the reply. I'm in between getting my 1 year experience with dry van and driving or just go for it. Kind of hesitant of change but have wanted to do flat bed since I graduated. It's either try to get into maverick and do glass dedicated out of Gaurdian in Geneva (which I am on the waiting list for) and PGT

Put in applications everywhere. Less than a year experience may not turn on any flatbed companies especially given weather in the Northeast and the general winter slow down. It's like fishing. Keep casting until you get a bite. Regional flatbed with less than a year experience may be a tough sell. The better companies prefer at least 3 years experience. All you can do is try. Flatbed in my opinion isn't all it's cracked up to be. Chaining, strapping and tarping can be miserable when it's hot, cold and or wet. Pay often times isn't a whole lot better. I would stay put through the winter months if you are running steady. Put out feelers now and make a move in the spring when building picks up again. Expect a slow down in dry can after Christmas. It's historically a slow time of year for trucking across the board. I'm not trying to discourage you from flatbed work which is a great springboard to heavy haul/specialized, and a good choice for a trucking career. It's just a tough time of year for a change especially given your experience level.

Thanks that was my thought as well. Get the driving experience of the northeast then make a go of it. Thanks
