If you've worked most of the YEAR you may be able to draw unemployment. As far as keeping your job, dunno. You'd have to be laid off to claim UE anyway........

Unless you own your own truck, I doubt you could take off that long. They would require you to turn the truck in, and then if you want to come back, they would treat you as a new hire. Also if you take off too long, a lot of companies require a refresher course, I believe this is at 3 mo off.

That said...great question and here is how it has worked for me...
The winter is the most dangerous time of the year for any driver and depending on the company you work for..no. However...there are plenty of great driving days even in winter...depending where you live.
This is another reason I love dedicated and local...weather gets bad...STAY HOME and cite a safety issue which you would be able to...especially under DOT rules. Some companies whine and cry BUT not only are you looking out for you but also their CSA score and you might want to remind them of this.
I will drive out in light to moderate snow...but never icy conditions of any kind....this is just asking for it.While one might be a good driver....you always have that idiot out there that is not and can slam into you on the bad roads...
Also...someone wants you to go out West over the snowy mountains....tell them to get bentNavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Swift will allow you to take a personal leave of absence. You can come back without having to retrain. Get with your DL for more info. A friend of mine is going home to Puerto Rico for his annual winter 4 week vacation. He is a company driver, and of course will have to give up his truck.

I know drivers who take off for weeks at a time. They get the okay from operations and human resources, and it is usually not a problem. Just dont wait until the last minute to ask.
