It has to do with drivers not slowing the #### down when the roads are bad, pickup truck drivers and tractor trailer drivers. Every time it snows I see pickup trucks flipped over on their roofs and tractor trailers on their sides in the ditch. It's all because they don't drive for the road conditions. I haul Super b's here and I've never wrecked a truck because I know when to slow down. It's unfortunate that someone lost their life. Happens too often on Alberta roads.

I guess I'm fortunate to have one of the better trucking jobs making above average wages. I agree that the quality of truck drivers has declined. Too many of these bottom feeder companies driving freight rates down and putting any steering wheel holder in the seat and paying them peanuts

besides weather conditions what would be the difference between canada and the us? is this related more or less to road conditions and weather or the quality of the driver's? winter cinditions happen on both sides of the border.

Unfortunately its an attitude thing. Most people in Alberta could really give a crap about anyone else on the roads. They drive like they're invincible. A lot of that had to do with the big oil patch money that we used to see out here.
As for trucking, most of the highway and gravel hauling has been monopolized by a group of people who'll work for almost nothing, which has undercut reputable outfits and O/O's to the point where its just not worth it to drive. Many of these guys have virtually no driving experience and I doubt the majority of them had ever seen snow before coming here. It all comes back to my original comment about the pathetic licencing regulations in Alberta. There should be a requirement for proper driver training before being allowed to test for a Class 1-4 license.Runawayscreaming and dca Thank this. -
i have heard people say it's gonna take a politician losing someone close to him before changes are made. Well let's see if changes are made after this loss. Let's hope.

Look at Highway 63. It took 7 people burning to death in one wreck before the government got off their ##### and got the ball moving to get that highway twinned. It needed it with all those oversized loads and the amount of commuter traffic it sees on a daily basis.

The big carriers aren't going to weed out anything. They got what they wanted. Cheap drivers. The fact that they can't drive doesn't figure in their thoughts at all. They're too busy huddled around their computer with the accountant totalling up payroll savings.Runawayscreaming Thanks this.

Something may be wrong with trucking when working for Walmart is held up as the pinnacle of success. Isn't that the company that locks its employees in stores at night? Walmart also distinguished itself as the company that killed Jimmy Mack last year:

Walmart from what I have been told treats its drivers very well, and compensates them for their time. You cant hold a company responceable for a drivers actions (this one had been up 24 hours) when we control our actions also. Tho on that note when it becomes a reoccurring theme then it can be a company problem.
From the Walmart drivers I have ran in to most say Walmart is very safety sensitive so much so it can be nagging. But they are happy where they are and what they do.
