They harvest the information from trucking schools, acting as if they are recruiters. The schools give them the info and they call the recent grads, boiler room style from payphones etc. telling the recent grads they have a job offer for such n such but you have to send x amount of dollars for application fees etc, etc.
Guy tried to pull that crap on me after I graduated and got my cdl. Guy was calling from az claiming he was hiring for Celadon. Probably an ex driver taking advantage of greenhorns. I didn't actually talk to him, he left a message on my voicemail but I knew something wasn't right with that picture. Shortly thereafter, I got a call from my school telling me there was a guy that called claiming to be a recruiter and they gave info out but learned quickly the guy was up to no good and called all the students and let them know about it. Sad really.

I'd not thought of it in this light, but I recently graduated from a CDL school. I've received three calls so far from them, asking if I was interested in such and so trucking company. Each time I said "Yes, I've sent them an application", the school responded with "They just called".
I'd expected the prospective companies to call the school - gotta check whether I'm real or not. Never occurred to me at all that the school was checking BACK, making sure I was not being set up.
That's probably not the whole story with the school calling me, but it's certainly a result. Makes me happier than ever I went to that school. -
Yes, Brian went to a CDL school and filled out the app online for Roehl. So who knows -- he also had told the school he was going to Roehl -- they weren't one of the recruiters that had come there though. But he had needed his receipt from school (we had paid over the phone) so when he called to get that, he told them what he was doing.
The thing is, there were so many "points of info" going out -- school, physical at a clinic in St. Paul, MN Roehl requested that does the necessary physicals for a variety of occupations, another company he drove for while waiting for his Roehl start date (who knew his Roehl start date), Roehl, the internet (where you can get info on almost anyone -- I know I haven't gotten us off all the internet white pages), even this forum. So who knows.
Again, his recruiter said Roehl had been told about scams like these going on in other companies and people here have mentioned similar calls also, so it doesn't seem like if it IS inside at Roehl, that its unique to Roehl. That actually makes me think it may be something other than the hiring companies themselves.
It's interesting too.... the first 7 calls all came from a TN area code (around Nashville) with caller ID just listing "payphone" although each set of calls had a little different prefix-- but the one i got at the end (while I was posting) was about 4 hours later and it said "CFL payphone" with a 712 area code which is the western 1/4 of IA, but it was the same guy. So I don't know if he could have gotten that far in 4 hours, but that seems strange to me.
BTW, I didn't think the guy sounded very professional.
Anyway, BEWARE!

Fraud across State Lines over the Phone or thru the US Mail is a Federal Offense. You should be able to contact the FBI about it. If they have other cases like this, maybe your case would help the other ones too.
A picture ID maybe required to pickup Western Union money these days, which could be used to catch the scammers.
And caller ID can now be spoofed. (faked) -
yes they can I keep getting a call from area code 555, with the exchange number 555...I don't answer the call.
-
This should be a piece of cake...send them a bogus check and arrest them?
-
Or have the feds set them up with a western union. that way when they try to get the money the cops walk in the door and grab the guy or gal.
-
If they can spoof Caller ID, then a Fake picture ID maybe used too.
{Unless they are REALLY DUMB and use their own ID !
}
And I think Western Union money can be picked up from any location? (Not sure, I have only sent money home from overseas.)
Perhaps, a WU problem with the money forcing the scammer to
come back or at least give a location and camera photo.
