Not really finding an answer to this anywhere including the State's web site. Can a 1 truck owner who does not want their own authority buy their own IRP plate & then lease on to a company ? I know many companies have a plate program, but I've heard too many stories of things not working out & the company demands their plate back & keeps all the plate money. But the information I'm seeing seems full of contradictions. You can not purchace plate without a DOT # You can not get a DOT # without cargo insurance. But once leased on, you'd be running under the company DOT # & their cargo insurance. Yet you are not yet leased to any particular company at time of plate purchasing. I'm obviously missing something . The BMV office does not have a reputation of being helpful, competent, or courteous either, so I figure it best to have as much information as possible before paying them a visit. Thank you.

Some will let you run yer own plates. Most want you on their system so they can keep track of everything all at once. Kinda like being on a baseball team, and everybody's uniform is the same

Yes you can run your own irp ifta and everything else. You can have your own dot number, just don't display it when leased on with someone else.

You have to have cargo insurance before obtaining a MC#, but you do not have to have cargo insurance to get a USDOT#. A private carrier has to have a DOT#, but not cargo insurance or MC#. The distinction is wheter or not you haul your own goods/products/equipment, or you haul someone else's for hire.

You can run your own or the company can provide it. If they're paying for it gladly be their guest. Some prefer you run theirs and it's in the contract anyways. Many of them will cover the cost. Some don't. Why do you expect to get money back that you paid on a plate if you quit? IRP doesn't refund money why would the company? Use it or lose it. It's a cost. Deal with it. And yes the company will demand their plate back when you quit leaving you without one. I never saw a truck that wouldn't crank up and drive without a tag on it. Of course it's not impossible to get a temporary tag if one is so inclined.

If the carrier you're leased to allows it, you can run your own baseplate you just have to get it using their DOT number and would need to show your state the signed lease agreement. At least that's what I had to do to get mine

The answer is yes, you can run your own plate. You can't be forced to run theirs unless they pay for it. You can run your own bobtail and liability insurance too, they can't require you to get theirs unless they pay for that as well. If you run under their authority they provide the primary liability insurance for the combo. Whoever owns the trailer provides cargo. If you have questions call the OOIDA insurance dept they will give you the complete scoop.

Mercer allows it up until the point where your plates expire. Then they want you running with theirs.
Many companies are like that, and I'm not sure why.
Maybe it's because it's easier to monitor the tickets/citations of the drivers? Or it's a safe bet to blame anything in this industry on insurance...

Slowpoke is right, we have done it both ways. I have had owners want us to get the plates and others get their own. I prefer them to get their own, that away if it does not work out between us I don't have to worry about having a plate sitting in mile filing cabinet not being used.
