I'd wait out the winter and try for Dayton Freight in February or March.

I saw a company out near Akron Ohio hiring people to haul crude oil and it paid fairly decent and the drivers were home everyday and I think it worked a 12 hour shift. Look on Akron Craigslist.

I don't know a lot about them, but Kelley Transport is the truckload division. I see a couple of them regularly at my terminal, and I think they get home pretty often for sleeper truck drivers. That could be a stepping stone to Dayton Freight. DF technically only requires 1 year of experience, but I'm not sure how much they actually want. Maybe your buddy could keep you updated on when they start hiring drivers again so you can get an interview. Dayton is a bigger terminal than mine, so they will most likely have more opportunities that pop up.
