Regardless of the truth of the matter OP needs to man up and make things as right as his conscious allows. Evidently is is readily apparent that you don't want to work for the truck owner, and he wants to spend as little as possible in recovering his equipment. Your responsibility is to at the very least secure his truck in a sfae haven so as to avoid theft etc. His recourse is the expenses to recover his equipment and repair any damage obtained after abandonment. His recourse is civil, however if you do the damage there might be criminal avenues available to him. You can't go to jail for abandoning a truck or trailer, you can if you sell the load out the back before you go. That is theft. He can and probably will withhold any and all pay due and even send you a bill for any difference to defray costs of recovery. A civil judgement in his favor can obtain a court order for future earnings. As for your CDL, that is a state issued document, nothing he can do with it. As for DAC, that is like a credit reporting agency. They are subscription based and have to comply with the fair credit reporting act, just like trans union TRW etc. The majority of small carriers do not report, nor pay for reports from them. Most DAC customers are large carriers looking to circumvent laws regarding for hiring processes. Especially when it comes to negative information about a prospective employee as Equal Opportunity laws prohibit former employers to provide negative information and opinion to be released to prospective employers. Not to say it doesn't happen, just that it really is unlawful. As for the employer, you really can't blame him for putting you under his employ and then you scheming up a reason to dump his equipment somewhere. He doesn't know you, your work ethic, how honest you are, etc. All he knows is he just put out some money out of his pocket and you flaked. If you were in his shoes you would be a little torqued off too. So do what you feel you need to do, you have already burned the bridge. Even if you took the truck back to Chicago and put it in his front yard you still won't gain any favor from him. Good Luck.
