Per my grandfather (back in the day)"I'm taking my break" "that's good but be at the next pickup in 3 hours" (dispatch.) Also as for the CDL Mills, his first boss just gave him the keys and let him figure it out. But he had at least drove a dump truck before that. He's still driving today and theres things he dosent miss about the old days. On the other hand he always says it was easier to get a helping hand when it was needed. And even in the 90s I remeber the truck stop atmosphere being much nicer than today. But that was in KY. One things for sure especially in the winter I'd prefer almost everyone be tuned in on the CB. I've got helpful warnings even in my short time and gave em too. And it just kinda stinks when someone goes down the road with a DOT violation and you try to tell em and they don't even have a radio to tell you to take a hike with.

lol! they did? ..that's quite a concoction of bad news.

Yeah I am sure it was great not having to deal with social media, political correctness and bad news 24/7.

There's still something about lightin' the fire first thing, and showing up on time to deliver a load. Tying down a load properly, shifting gears, it's all skills I've fought to learn. And no-one can take that away from me. I earned it.

I dont think any of that is very fair... the fact is, there just isnt as much decent paying blue collar work to go around these days. Our entire manufacturing sector has been shipped over seas, and everything left like construction has had wages gutted by an abundance of illegal labor, leaving trucking as one of the few decent industries someone can get into without a 4 year degree or apprenticeship. The only reason trucking even still pays what it does is due to the strict licensing and employment record keeping required..
