    I wonder are doubles just for linehaul or do city drivers haul doubles around too ?

    It depends on what you are talking about. If you are talking vans with local P & D, they don't normally use doubles in a city. Though you might need to hook a set and take it to a location and then break it up to deliver each trailer.
    Gas tankers, do use doubles to deliver with, and you will see aggregate haulers doing local work, using doubles.

    I run city and yes I take a set to a customer break it put one in their door leave as they unload and reload.Take my second trailer I go to my next stop deliver unload and reload myself then back to the first customer. Grab my trailer out of their door hook my set and head on back. It's not bad work I really enjoy it

    I do two turns like I described above a day. Then I'm done and go home. I like it because I get good exercise I'm on salary so my pay doesn't change First stop, drop and break set on CT/NYC line,put first trailer in their dock door, grab second trailer, run to Manhattan or whatever borough they need me in that day Unload reload..( places can be really tight to get in or they take curbside). Then come back out to CT stop and grab my first trailer that's all ready for me at that time. Head back to yard and repeat again. It's a full day everyday you use all your time. Monday through Friday though

    I pull doubles sometimes when I'm helping out the city desk. It's usually bulk loads, tires in my case. Cake work, at least after I manage to jam the empties into the tiny drop lot they've provided us and as long as I manage to avoid the reckless yard jockey that tends to bang trailers around like pinballs.

    I worked all city P&D and we are all required to have double, tanker and hazmat. City runs doubles into distribution centers and I've pulled doubles out to further citys from our hub and deliver both trailers. (dropping one and delivering the other then swapping trailers and repeat, or one goes to a DC and the other is local deliveries, etc.). I've also had to do late linehaul runs that didn't make it overnight, running to our FAC in the morning.

    At my terminal, there are a few P&D runs where the driver takes doubles. One is usually a bulk load that gets spotted and unloaded while the driver is making the deliveries with the other trailer. After the first one is empty the driver makes pickups until the it's is full then grabs the empty and finishes up.

    As much as I would prefer running out of a pup, it is time consuming to have to drop and hook multiple times. On a busy day, that's a lot of wasted time.
