Meaning the four recliners or was there more to the lounge before I arrived that was wasted?

There were only 4. And they were cheap. IMO, hardly any thought was given to furnishings. Lots of electrical outlets, but nothing to put your stuff on to charge. Who wants to have their electronics on the floor? So, until they get more furniture, the money was indeed wasted. Heck, they could go to a thrift store and get used couches and chairs if they don't want to spend a ton of money to get new. And tables to put against the walls for charging stations. A suggestion box too. I'm sure we have ideas that would be good. Like an ice machine. We asked for one in the remodel and got a popcorn maker. And that's not even in the lounge so it can only be used when people are downstairs. Not that I eat it, it's just an example. Im sure they'd have to cull through bs submissions as well, but I think it would be worth it. At least a "show" that they listen. Again, just my .02, and I know exactly how much my opinion is worth to most here.

Never thought about the plugs but you are right... The walls are rather barren of places to lay down toys while charging or to actually work on them while sitting in the lounge.JohnBoy Thanks this. -
Ok, so I was going to do my year end report card on the company tomorrow after I was finishing my reset, but I'm over tired and in a rotten mood, so now is a good time. I was up and rolling at 3:30 this morning, 4:30 yesterday morning and 6am Friday morning. I'm thinking I'm just a tad tired. I'm here at my delivery, I'll have 15 hours into a reset when I get unloaded at 2am, then just off duty drive to the truck stop 2 miles from here.
I'm going to write about what I went through this past year. I made just shy of 70K, that includes training a little this past year. If you take out the money I made training, that leaves me at 62K. My earnings are fine, I happen to work at a company that doesn't scream and advertise hub miles, 48-52 cpm. I work for a company that has exactly what I need, brand new equipment, great freight lanes, excellent home time and leaves me alone. I could go to work for any company out there, and I'll name just 2, Poly Trucking, 48 cpm off the hub, but junk equipment, Cargo Transporters, 48 cpm and no miles. These are just 2 companies that I follow, neither one of them offers anything that would come close to what I have here at Abilene. I named these two because I want to make a point that there's more to a job then an advertised rate. This year my goal is 75k with the same home time.
Now, let me talk about what I have been through, my experience, the good and the bad. None of what I'm going to write has ever once made me think of leaving, at my age, and my short time to retirement, I'm not looking for a new job, I'm counting the days until I retire. Abilene, with the grace of God, will be my last job. I'm very fortunate, in almost 37 years of doing this, I've put money into a retirement portfolio for 35 of those years. The two years that I missed was because I opened a business, that I sold after 11 years for a very good piece of change. I have had the good fortune of being able to do the job I truly love, and not have too live paycheck to paycheck. All this has allowed me to be very selective in who I work for.
Now, the report card on Abilene, January 1st of 2015 I had Tim as my fleet manager, he took care of the trainers and was very good at his job. Unfortunately, he quit in March to go to a better situation for himself. I then got Kimberley for 10 days. When I first hired on at Abilene, she was my first FM, after six months I was about to quit because of her, I'll leave it at that for now. After Kimberley I got Walter. I had Walter for 2 months. I then Got Mark who I had for 4 months. After Mark went back on the road I was given back to Kimberley. My second go around with her proved to be my best association with anyone at Abilene, she was great, but I knew it wasn't going to last. She was over burdened, had a promotion and then one day I find out that I was transferred to Wytheville with Shane as my new FM. So I had a total of 6 Fleet Managers this past year. I'm going to be very honest, the picture on the wall can become my FM tomorrow, it doesn't matter to me. Our FM's don't dispatch us, the load planners do. They know what I bring to the table, I've proved myself time and time again. I have said that our FM's fall into one of two category's, a babysitter, or a personal secretary, I'm smart enough to know which one I'm in. I'm also smart enough to know, where I am in the eye's of the company. They have two books, one for drivers that can't or won't, and one for drivers that can and will, again I know which one I'm in.
Operations is a beast all unto itself, the crap they have to deal with on a daily basis is enough to make your head spin. What bothers me about the operation is this, we are all lumped into the same category. My biggest concern is not my miles, (plenty), not the equipment, (new), but my home time, and my pay. I had zero mistakes this past year. My home time was perfect. I had to be home 4 specific days this past year and I was, the other times were just fine. Again, the things that would make drivers leave, I have not experienced.
Believe me, this IS NOT a well oiled machine, in fact my biggest complaint is trying to figure out just how many "immediate" supervisors I have. It comes across as about 15, but in actuality it's 2, my FM and the person who signs my check. There are times where I wonder if how this company is being run, whether or not the owners see the same things I see. But hey, I was hired to pick up here and deliver there, safely, and that's what I do.
It took me a solid year to figure out how Abilene does things. Do I like everything they do? Hell no, but I'll tell you all this, their shortcomings aren't enough too make me leave. I have a saying, if whatever you do doesn't materially affect what I do, then I don't care, start messing with my earnings, then I will care, very loudly. I see a 75k-80k year ahead of me, that's what drives me. I also see a great work relationship getting better.White_Knuckle_Newbie, Lonesome, tractorman1970 and 3 others Thank this. -
A whole year to figure it out eh? Good, I still have time before the test... LOL
Thanks for the summation of your year here. I for one appreciate hearing the views of others. Beyond the moaning and groaning that happens all too often that is.
Thanks for Sharing.White_Knuckle_Newbie and JohnBoy Thank this. -

Well Im sitting out in Oregon tonight. Nice little 2700 mile load to end the week with. Hope everyone is doing well. Christmas was good. I have enough toys in my house now to completely cover the floor from one end to the other. My 3 daughters could start their own toy store lol. I haven't been on in a while but it's good to see I'm on the same page as everyone else. The drivers lounge, I agree...waste of funds so far. RebelChick is right. They need tables and a suggestion box too. Some one fill me in on these "containers"?

I will chime in on the year end report as well. Mine isn't as financially positive as JBs, but I did quit for a grand total of 3 weeks, had a bit of time off for personal & family illnesses and I don't train. I ended up with just shy of 50k. Not bad. I don't have a lot of bills, but I don't have a lot saved for retirement either. I'm a late comer to the "being financially stable crowd" and driving as well.
I've had 2 FMs - Kimberly and then Walter. Same experience with the first as JB and the second, it started out well, but hasn't been perfect. I get paid to pick up and deliver freight on time and I do that. If, for reasons beyond my control, I can't, I let them know asap. Only had to do that 2x in 3 years. Close hours and traffic accidents put me way behind, but thankfully there was someone in the area to get the load there. I've rescued many loads from drivers in the same manner. I've not ever said no to a load that I could legally do, although I've not been happy to be heading to a place or two.
For the babysitter or secretary, I try not to even talk to anyone in the office, but I would hope that they don't think I need a babysitter. And for the "can't/can, won't/will books", I don't really care which one anyone at Abilene (or anywhere else) thinks I'm in as long as I have enough to cover my household. I can, and have, delivered their freight on time (and here's the biggie) when I'm given the freight to run. Since I have time on runs, I take that time. Why show up early, just to sit somewhere that is undesirable when you can sit where you have things to do?
Home time has been good for me as well. Although with my living so close if I get in a day early, they usually send me home early. Sometimes with a load to deliver early and then to the house. Or just take an mty. More time at home most times since I schedule my appts for the 2nd day of home time just in case.
The run I'm on now is a charity one with all kinds of time built in. Disaster relief in the Dallas area. One of the owners favorite things. I give Keith Jones much respect for giving back to the community. Picked it up Friday and was hoping to get it offloaded today, but the guy can't get a crew until tomorrow. But, I did get to hang out with some friends of mine here at the USX terminal in Irving today. So, it worked out ok in the end.
So, I must like it here ok since I quit and came back. The equipment is good and the places I go are as well. I get a decent paycheck and get to see my family regularly. What more could you ask for? Maybe to be able to be home every night, but you can't have everything. People are always saying this isn't just a job, it's a lifestyle and you have to really love it to do it. For me it's a job. Guess that's why I don't make the big bucks like JB! (You know I couldn't end without being sarcastic!)Lonesome, MidWest_MacDaddy, tractorman1970 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Dang that was really long!!
