Hello, I start Prime on January 18th 2016 for orientation. I have a Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement and Hazmat. I am looking to Lease a truck and drive in the tanker division. The only thing is I lack the experience so I will have to go out with a trainer for 3 months. I would like to hear from someone who as went through the training and now driving on the tanker side. Mileage?Pay? Not worried about the home time because its zero to none. What I am looking for is the pay as a company driver good? Also from a lease point of view does it cover the bills?
How is life for a Company Driver or Lease Driver in Prime Tanker Division

Pay attention to everything for those three months, pay, miles, lease payments, repairs(any you have to pay for) and downtime. If your new to driving, it is best not to leasing. The added stress is not something you need in the beginning.
I started out at Trans Am, their lease is a scam. Most of the drivers a asked were broke and the few that got a paycheck didn't sound like they were happy.
The idea alone of paying someone money, to use their equipment to make money doesn't make much sense. If you still want to, write down those expenses plus were your drops are located. You need to have an idea were your going after each drop, so your not sitting around wait to be dispatched for a load. Check to see if the model trucks your driving are problematic.
I was a company driver for TA, my opinion on leasing is from what I saw and heard from other drivers, hope this helps -
Thank you for your response and I will utilize your advice. My biggest concern with Prime is company drivers are put in lightweight trucks! I will be OTR and I cant live in a closet with no to little storage. If i get a full sized truck then company is fine if not then leasing it will be. I have over 6 years experience running my own small business and from what I learned so far if you do not have experience running your own business, payroll and taxes then leasing is not for you. The only x factor i have about leasing is will i get pay/loads to cover the fixed and variable cost??

I think it was a Prime driver that meticulously documented his expierience with the lease in the tank division. If you find it skip to the end ...he didnt make it..The odds are not in your favor..Even with you having previous expierience running a small business you will still be facing an up hill battle from the start. Even if you were a seasoned driver i would advise against a lease.
I do agree with you on those light weight trucks they have. What has come of this industry, drivers willing to get in those small trucks stay out weeks if not months and drive 54 mph just unbelievable .
Your on the right track, why not go company and get a paycheck every week. Maybe even look at some of the much better tank companys Chinatown has suggested that hire newbies.(strong suggestion)
For what its worth we still try to give food and warm blankets to the lease drivers during the holidays.JoeH77 Thanks this. -
Leasing and Prime aren't your only options. There are many tanker companies to choose from. Don't back yourself into a corner.
