I asked the repair guy about the fuel bowl. He had never heard of disconnecting it. Where is the fuel bowl and how hard is it to disconnect?

I'm sorry. I should have said I knew what was causing my sons problem. It was the fuel heater causing the problem on the 7.3 International. It's located at the bottom of the filter housing. This is a very well known problem on the 90's 7.3. Most disconnect the wire going to it. Some change it out. It's about a 30 dollar item on the 7.3.truckon Thanks this.

Yup, what he said. If you Google it you can get a pic of the wire. -
Did you get your problem fixed?
-
Yes, we ended up taking it to the mechanic we have used for years. The local international dealer was a joke.

How much did you feel their mechanics' knowledge level impacted their ability to troubleshoot the issue? And what was the final solution?
I know some mechanics are just hired to fill positions and some of the old ones just show up to do wheel work because they don't know new tech. -
Original Poster Update : We ended up replacing the fuel tank and it has run fine since end of November. Crossing my fingers because it went from August to October without a problem. We experienced the problem in August and then Oct and Nov. so I would not be shocked if this didn't fix it and it happened again since it went several months between sporadically having the problem.
By the way... We have two different trucks in the past 3 months need new fuel tanks because they were so rusty. Not only our 2006 International 466DT in November which cost $2800, but today we are replacing a rusted tank of a 2008 F450 6.4 L fuel tank for $1800
Yesterday we took our 2008 F450 in for an oil change and routine maintenance. The mechanic called us back and said that we had so much rust and gunk in the fuel filter that the mechanic said the filter is coming apart. We cant look down in the tank like we do on our internationals.
In the 35 year we have been in business we have NEVER before had a problem with a fuel tank rusting out and we have always driven old trucks (normally International 4900-4300 and F450s)
Is this just a huge coincidence that two of our four trucks have had to have new fuel tanks due to rust problems.
What are we doing wrong? What caused this?
Why do fuel tanks rust out? I read that we should have caught the issue when we changed previous filters.
What can we do to prevent future problems?
Thanks for any all help, ideas, and suggestions .

To answer your question: we are at the point where we don't have much confidence in any one around here. You ask about trouble shooting. I think they just start replacing and finally they hit the right thing.

Fuel tanks, do you let the tanks stay below 1/2 level for a long time, like only refueling when empty? The tank will rust if they empty all the time, which allows the atmosphere, humidity and moisture in.
