Working 6 months out the year

The best thing would be to take a leave of absence and stay on the books if they will let you

 

If I had a company I would not even consider keeping a driver that runs away when it gets difficult in the winter. But I do not own a company.

 

Idk, it's not like you would be the first, many drivers do this. You would have to be in good standing with your manager. I had done this, but it was because I left one job to another n decide I need a vacation before I started the new one.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe it isn't a big deal. But for me, I see no guarantee to have a job to come back to.

If you leave because of medical, family or military, by law the company has to keep you in their payroll

If voluntary, the company do not have to offer you your job back.

Then there's the mandatory insurance coverage. And explainin why there's a gap in work history

 

yeah I see what you are saying. probably more negatives involved in it than the benefit of some time off. I would probably only consider it if I ever get into the OO thing

 

I did it as a company driver for FFE and Transport America. Few companies turn away proven quality drivers

That driver abandoned a load; hopped on a flight to overseas destination without notification to employer.

 

Not saying it's the same thing, but similar in that the OP wanted to work 3-4 months and then leave for 4-5 months.

 

He had a good deal going with Swift until he abandonded that load and left the states without warning.

 

My dream when I become an o/o is to work 3 months in the Spring and 3 months in the Fall.

Spend my winter months in Thailand living cheap and my summers sailing the Great Lakes or the Eastern Seaboard.

I own a small house on a decent size of property in SW Florida that costs me a 100 bucks a month for taxes and utilities.

The property is big enough that I can build a garage to lock my truck up in when I am away.

I live pretty cheap no kids ,pets ,wives or girlfriends, no desire for expensive cars or motorcycles.
Own 2 boats that don't break me.

I Want to buy a old Freightliner classic and slowly rebuild it top to bottom by spending a few weeks on it every spring and fall before I vacation.
