I thought that off road had a higher sulfer content. I've been out of the construction game for a bit though...
It must be the brand new Deere stuff because I've run some very new Deere loaders, track hoes, dozers, and graders and none have had DEF. I bet the construction industry is just so ecstatic to have to worry about having to buy DEF now (and keep it clean to boot!)

Deere didn't right away, and the trucks they bought for their parts fleet were Maxxforce Internationals. Their competitors were hammering them and warranty issues as well, so they wised up, they are selling bulk DEF at many of the dealers I go by in my travels. Brothers still farm and buy new.

Komatsu uses DEF. Now the new larger Kubota agricultural tractors have added it also.

Thank you guntoter, regardless of what anyone can prove definitively right this second, I too have been in a peterbilt dealer and been fed all the "info" on the new paccar engines.
I'm looking to buy my first truck this year after a year leasing a truck and will be sticking with the ISX I think. The one in my lease pete has been a good motor so far. This information is enough to make me shy away from what I see as an unproven design in both reliability and durability. Maybe they will be good in the long run....I'm not willing to put my livelihood on the line to be the guinea pig.
I am curious to see how this plays out though. I was told by the peterbilt dealer in springfield that PRIME has over 1000 579s with paccar motors in them on order. It will be interesting to see the stats on their failures over a broad spectrum, because I doubt any company will stand large down times for long on a majority of their trucksLast edited: Jan 29, 2016

Good luck with whatever you buy. They're all a crap-shoot.
I know lots of guys heavy hauling with 500 Paccar's and they love them and no issues.
Our ISX600 has been a nightmare.

This is true, and I understand that. My post was not meant to be doom and gloom, just that a lemon truck would probably bankrupt me in my first year as an O/O.
Our last company truck was a 2013 t680 and at 200k the isx15 in it was using a gallon of oil every 2k miles, and we were running team, I was keeping 3 gallons of oil in the side box.
Ended up having to turn it in at 200k for a warranty rebuild
This one is at 208k (my 579)and barely uses a qt until 30k when I change my oil... (to heck with cummins' 50k recommended) and has been virtually trouble free.
It does seem that paccar is forcing the mx down our throats though, as only one in 10 new trucks I see have an ISX. -
Ya, don't get me wrong.....I'm not shooting down your choice, or trying to depress you. We are all in the same boat. The rates aren't that good, that you can deal with a lemmon.
It's just become a truly sad situation thanks to the EPA. If their plight was to truly save the world, they should have left our old reliable fuel efficient engines alone, and went after the big factories and THEMSELVES for dumping all kinds of crap in the rivers and streams.
I used to live by a steel mill and I saw it all the time. As soon as it got dark, you'd get up in the morning and everything in the neighborhood was black....under a thick cover of graphite they would dump into the sky.taxihacker66 and spectacle13 Thank this. -
